Billie Harris - Jun 5, 2008
This is my line, as well as that of Larry Lewallen, Cindy Lewallen and Dianne Barnes who are members of this site. the information was compiled many years ago and has been added to by Cindy. If anyone can add to it, please let us know. We're desperately looking for Wiley's parents and siblings so please help us find them.

WILEY and MARY LEWALLEN
The earliest Lewallen family which we found on our "Tree" is that of Wiley Lewallen. He and his wife, Mary (called Polly), were born in North Carolina about 1795 according to census data and were married there. Mary's name has been given as Mary (Polly) Carlton by some genealogists but it isn't sure where the information came from and it hasn't been substantiated. Their daughter, Anita (Nettie) was born 1820 (also given as 1822), son, Calvin, born 1823 in North Carolina and after his birth, they moved to Tennessee and on to Alabama. The 1840 Calhoun County, Alabama shows Wyly Lewallen and in that county in 1843 Nettie or Anita Luallen married Robert W. Witt on December 27 (she was born 1822). The 1850 census for Cherokee County, Alabama shows the family, excluding Calvin for at that time he was married and had his own household. The 1860 census shows the only remaining child to be Roda (spelled Rhoda in the 1850 census).
In 1854 Cherokee County, there was a Cintha Lewallen who belonged to the Pisgah Baptist Church; she was dismissed by letter August 12, 1854. Whether she was the wife of one of the Lewallens or was actually a daughter, it isn't yet known, but there were others of this family who were members of the Pisgah Baptist Church.
the 1860 census for Cherokee County, Alabama, shows the following:
Household 1173 - Calvin Luallen age 37 born NC, Aramanta 24 TN, Mary 15, Joseph 13, James 11, William 9, Andrew 7, Catherine 5, Martha 3 and Elizabeth 5/12
Household 1178 - Wiley Luallen 54 N.C., Mary 54 NC, Roda 19 AL.
Household 1179 - Robert Witt TN, Neaty TN and their family Neaty/Nettie was Anita Lewallen, daughter of Wiley and Mary.
Household 1181 - John Witt 34 TN, Elizabeth 33 TN, William 9, Charles 6, Silas 3
1182 - Pleasant Witt 21 TN, Louisa 17 TN
1183 - William K. Wily 49 TN, Ransom 23 GA
1186 - Andrew Luallen 25 TN, Ann 23 AL, Mary 4 AL, Martha 1 AL
Others in the vincinity were Haney, Rankin, Graham, Forlinberg?
Also in Cherokee County household 180 was Francis B. Lewallen 29 (1831) North Carolina, Permelia 23 SC, Columbus 3 and Mary 1. Next door was William Bradley 47 SC, Nancy Heath? 67 SC, B. Turner SC, Balson, Teague, Prater. Whether they were any relation to Wiley's family isn't known at this time.
the 1870 Census for Cherokee County, Alabama shows:
Dwelling 26 - W. Louallen 71 N.C. Real estate value $200, personal property value $267, wife Pollie 70 NC, E. (Eliza) Witt, daughter 24, M. Witt 8 (female), F. Witt 6 female. Eliza married Pleasant Witt who was killed in battle. See below
Dwelling 27 - C. Louallen, (Calvin) carpenter, real estate value $400, personal property value $695. He was born in North Carolina, Araminta 37, Mary 25, James 21, Henry 19, Andrew 17, Catherine 15, Lucinda 11, Levi 9, Lorena 7
Dwelling 39 - R. Witt, Nettie and family (see Anita Lewallen below.)
Dwelling 39 - S. Witt age 80 and Susanna Witt 75. This would be Silas Witt and his his wife Susanna (Randolph) Witt. Silas was born Virginia and was a preacher and Susanna was born 1795 Tennessee, daughter of James and Sarah (Gentry) Randolph.
Dwelling 45 - J. Louallen 22, farm hand, with wife Mary J. 19 and Eliza C. (This would probably be Joseph, son of Calvin)
Mary (Polly) Lewellen is shown in the Bell County, Texas, 1880 census living right next door to Araminta Lewellen who was Calvin Lewallen's widow. In that census, Polly was age 78 (1802) and born North Carolina. Both her parents were born North Carolina. Living with Polly was Eliza Witt, her daughter, and Francis Witt.
Wiley's occupation was that of a farmer. Both Wiley and Mary are buried in the Lewallen Cemetery in Troy, Texas. Their children were:
1. ANITA (Nettie) LEWALLEN WITT
Born May 14, 1820 and died March 9, 1890 in Texas. She married as his first wife Robert Wesley Witt, son of Silas and Susanna (Randolph) Witt Dec. 27, 1843. After she died, robert married Mary Taylor in Texas. Robert Wesley Witt was born April 10, 1822 Tennessee and died May 1898 in Moody, McLennan County, Texas.

6. JANE LEWALLEN
Born 1837 Alabama
7. RHODA (or RODA) LEWALLEN WITT
Born 1839- 1841 (dependong in census) Alabama. Rhoda married Marion Witt, nephew of Pleasant Francis Witt who was her sister's husband.
8. ELIZA LOUISA LEWALLEN WITT
Born 1843 Alabama and died 1909 in Moody, Texas. She's buried in the Moody Cemetery. She married Pleasant Francis Witt August 4, 1860. They, too, belonged to the Pisgah Baptist Church and she was baptized on August 12, 1844. The minister of the Church was Rev. Silas Witt who was the father of Pleasant Witt. Pleasant Francis Witt was born 1839 Benton County, Alabama. He died Aug. 12, 1862 in the Battle of Cedar Mountain (Co. E, 47th Alabama Infantry). The 1870 census shows Eliza living with her parents and her two daughters, M. Witt age 8 and F. Witt age 6 The 1880 census shows Eliza living with her mother, Polly Lewallen, in Bell County with her son, Francis Witt.
"Under The Starry Cross" written by Robert L. Witt of Houston, Texas, is the following:
"WITT, PLEASANT F., 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company E, CSA. He was enlisted as a Private on 3 May 1862 by Captain J. M. Campbell. On a 30 December 1862 accounting list for pay and clothing he was described as age 24 years, eyes gray, hair dark, complexion fair, and 6 feet 1-1/2 inches. Under remarks appears the notation, "Died Aug. 12, 1862." the file contains a pension application letter from his wife Eliza Witt witnessed by her father, Wiley Lewallen, and dated 27 october 1862. A CS Treasury Department receipt for $62.03 payable to Eliza Witt at Centre, Cherokee County Alabama also appears in the record."
"Private Witt served in General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson's Division of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Private Witt was mortally wounded on 9 August 1862 at the Battle Cedar Mountain, Virginia in one of Jackson's many victories, and the Witt family's many losses - in this war. As green troops, the Alabamians were at first driven back in a furious attack by a Division of Union infantry, but were finally rallied by Old Stonewall himself who rode among the rebel troops on his little mare, swinging above his head his heathed saber which had picked that fateful moment to become stuck in its case. Jackson moved to the front of the line and fearlessly admonished his wavering green troops to rally behind him. Stonewall's antics served to shame those who had left their lines and, upon seeing their already legendary commander standing virtually alone before the onrushing enemy hosts, the young Alabamians' courage and pride soon returned. Those who fought for old Stonewall would later describe a mystic, almost religious, quality to the inspired leadership of this unique commander. History would judge him both a fanatic and a military genius, and Dixie would claim him as one its most revered legends.
"With their brigade counterparts t Cedar Mountain, the 47th alabama regrouped, dug in, and then poured several vollies into the assaulting Federals. When the Union advance faltered, the Confederates, spurred on by Old Stonewall, moved to the attack and drove the Federals fromt he field inflicting heavy losses in the Union ranks and precipitating the general engagement at Second Bull Runn near Manassas, Virginia three weeks later.
"After the battle, most of Jackson's troups were bivouacked on the field....
"The 47th Alabama would go on to become one of Jackson's most battle tested regiments, but Cedar Mountain was to be the only battle Pleasant Witt was to witness. In three years of war and fourteen battlefields, the troops of this unit would never again yield a position they were ordered to hold. Many historians have suggested that it was no coincidence that the fortunes of the Confederacy declined when Stonewall Jackson was acidentally shot by his own nervous skirmishers after the Battle of Chancellorsville the following year.
"Pleasant F. Witt was born in 1839. He was one of the seven sons of Silas and Susannah Randolph Witt to have served in the Southern cause and one of two to be sacrificed to the great tragedy of that war.

Buried in the Moody Cemetery. Robert brought his family to Texas from Alabama in the caravan with his father and mother, Silas and Susanna Randolph Witt, and other brothers and sisters and families. They settled near the town of Moody in Texas where they lived until they died. Their son, Christopher Columbus (Lum) Witt moved with most of his family to West Texas where he lived until he died. Many of his family still live in West Texas. After Anita died, Robert married Mary E. Taylor. She was a sister of Sarah Taylor, wife of Isaac Martin Witt, brother of Wesley. Children of Robert Wesley and Anita are listed as follows. There were no children by Mary. Note: Some of the following dates are questionable. The tombstone marker for Lucy Jane Witt shows she was born in 1848, however, the 1850 census does not show her in the family, and shows Christopher as one year old. The 1860 census shows Lucy as 8 years old. The 1860 census has many errors in the ages of the family.

JAMES CALVIN LEWALLEN
(went by Calvin)
James Calvin Lewallen was born in North Carolina in 1822 and died 1879. He's buried in the Lewallen Cemetery in Troy, Bell County, Texas. Per the 1850 census of Cherokee County, Alabama, he was a mechanic but the 1860 census lists his occupation as a wagon maker. On September 28, 1843, he married Eliza D. Hazel in Benton County (now Calhoun County), Alabama. Eliza was born in Alabama in 1827. Sometime between the taking of the 1850 and the taking of the 1860 census, Eliza died and Calvin married Arametta/Araminta Isham, born 1834 Tennessee, daughter of William Isham (born 1810 Tennessee) and his wife Sarah (born 1808 North Carolina. Arametta had brothers and sisters: Mary born 1830; Bolin born 1832; Allen born 1836; Inda born 1838; Elizabeth born 1840; Charles born 1842 and Carroll born 1845. Incidentally, both of said censuses had the spelling as "Luallen" for Calvin and his parents, however, his marriage license was issued under the spelling of "Lewallen" and it is known that often the census takers spelled the name as it sounded, which is obviously the case in this instance. The last information we find for Araminta was in the 1880 Bell County census as a widow age 44 born Tennessee. Living with her was Allen L. (Lee), Eliza and Henry and Lucinda French; Lucinda being oner of her daughters. Living right next door was Polly, Calvin's mother and in that household was Eliza Witt, a widow (their daughter) and Francis Witt. Polly was age 78 (1802) in that cenus. Calvin and Eliza's children are listed as numbers 1 through 5 below; the others are Calvin's and Araminta's.

WILLIAM HENRY LEWALLEN
William Henry Lewallen was born January 25, 1851, in Cherokee County, Alabama. On January 26, 1872, he and Amanda (Mandy) Narcissus Witt were married. He had proposed to her by mail when he lived in Bell County, Texas, and she was still in Alabama. Mandy was born February 9, 1851, in Centre, Cherokee County, Alabama, and died January 10, 1927, at Delight, Arkansas. They lived in Temple, Bell County, Moody, McLennan County, and Troy, Fannin County, Texas, and Pike County, Arkansas. After her death, Henry (as he was called) married Emma Hill of DeWitt, Arkansas, on December 5, 1927, however, the marriage lasted only for a very short time and they were divorced October 11, 1929. They remarried October 31, 1929, and it is not known if they divorced again, but they were separated and it is believed she moved to Canada. He died in September, 1932. Both Henry and Mandy are buried at Delight.
William Henry Lewallen rented seventy acres of land in Monkstown, Fannin County, Texas, which included an orchard and houses, from D. Brunson, for $125. Several of William and Mandy's children were born in Texas and in 1884, they moved on to Pike County, Arkansas, where the remainder of their fourteen children were born. The house where they lived in Arkansas still stands (at least in the 1960's); the boards were put together by wooden nails. It is located in Chalybeate (pronounced Ka-lib-i-it) Valley near Shawmut and Amity, Arkansas. The house sits in a field now with cattle grazing around. They later purchased lot 15, Block 98 at Pike City, valued in the tax books in 1904 at $100.00 on which taxes were then $2.07. He may have purchased that particular lot from R. F. Kelley and his wife because on May 20, 1893, there’s a warranty deed in Pike County from R. F. Kelley & wife to W. H. Lewallen. R. F. Kelley was his son-in-law’s father. From all records, he went from Pike County back to Texas - for what reason, it is not known. Perhaps it was to see if he should move his family back closer to the area where other relatives lived, but he returned to Pike County where he spent the remainder of his life.
Amanda, known to everyone as Mandy, died at the age of seventy-five years, eleven months and one day, on January 10, 1927. She was buried the following day at Delight.
William Henry Lewallen lived to be some eighty-one years. Both are buried in the cemetery at Delight.
