John Robert Babil Lewallen 1795-1848

John Corn - Sep 22, 2008

The name John Robert Babil Lewallen (1795-1848) has been thrown around the Internet for years and I would really appreciate if anyone can put this issue to rest once and for all. I feel like I am chasing the original invisible man. Does anyone have a documented source for this name?

Billie Harris - Sep 22, 2008

Never heard of the guy.   Can you tell us anything about him?

Rick Llewellyn - Sep 24, 2008

Do you have a location for him?

Yes, I have seen this site.   It has some obvious errors like dates, missing wives, children listed for the wrong wife, etc.   Also, it does not list any sources, per se.   It only says things like "one source says..."

According to several Family Trees on Ancestry.com -

John Robert Babil Lewallen   b 1795 in TN   d. 1848 in either "Gold Rush" (not otherwise specified) - or - Rush, IN. He was the son of Richard Lewallen (1763-1833) and either Grace Stokely (1773-1817) - or - Parazeda Vowell (1796-?).   He married Hannah Motley in 1830 in Tennessee and they supposedly had something like 10-11 children roughly between 1830-1850.   I won't bother to list the children.   I have tried to find any records for any of them and have found nothing there either.

IF he was born 1795 and was a son of Richard's, then he would have been the son of Grace and would have already   been an adult by the time Richard died.   When Richard died, he left minor children --

1838 -
I,   Enoch Foster Guardian of ALEXANDER M. LUALLEN, NANCY LEWALLEN, DANIEL LEWALLEN, JESSE LUALLEN, LOUISA LEWALLEN, & FREEMAN LEWALLEN, minor heirs of RICHARD LEWALLEN deceased do hereby report to your worship on account of all the Estate of said Minor Heirs of said which has come to my hand or possessions of Guardian (to wit)
Received of CHARLES LEWALLEN administrator of the Estate of Richard Lewallen deceased in promissory Notes payable to Myself as Guardian as aforesaid on different individuals Made Same by Security as I believe to be the amount. $1110.18
Sworn to in Open Court
William Cross, Clk
Enoch Foster

It would be good if we could obtain a copy of Richard's Will to see if he made any provisions for his older children but I seriously doubt he would give a son three given names.

I found a Rush County in Indiana but no Gold Rush.   Rush County is very near Jennings County, Indiana, and   Preble County, Ohio, and we do have Lewallens there.     I didn't find a John or Robert or Babil in Rush County's 1840 census - in fact, no Lewallens in that county.   One posting I read said that he died in Missouri 1848 during the gold rush.

I just found this on a GenForum posting and the person who wrote it is a member of this site:

I have just been checking some of the information listed on RootsWeb on Richard Lewallen born 1763. This has to be some of the most distorted information I have ever seen! These people placed this information on this site many years ago & since changed their email. I cannot contact them & the information is so wronggggggggggggg!

I wish to inform these people if they monitor this list to please go to RootsWeb & delete it off or make the correction! The information they have listed on Richard Lewallen/Luallen b 1763 Prince Edward Co, VA son John Lewallen is incorrectly stated. Richard Lewallen has an Unknown spouse in which I believe he had 3 children. One being John Lewallen b 1790 Prob Prince Edward Co, VA & d Jan 06, 1839 Anderson Co, TN married to Nancy Unk b Abt 1790 & d March 18, 1846 Anderson Co, TN.

I don't where they got the name John Robert Babil Lewallen b Abt 1788 d 1848 & m to Hannah Motley ??? as the son of Richard Lewallen b. 1763???

John Lewallen b 1790 & married to Nancy Unk are my gggg/g/parents. My John Lewallen was always in Anderson Co, TN.

Here's the proof!

John Lewallen was listed in," A Promise of Good Things," Longfield Baptist Church 1831-1981, by Edith Wilson Hutton, pages 15, 21, 33, 39, 41, First elected treasurer, (also church clerk) p 43, 44, (Recorded Deaths 1831-1839) John Lewallen, Jan 6, 1839. The surname is spelled various ways by different branches of the family. The 1830 Federal Census of Anderson Co list the surname of Richard as "Luallen" & John's surname as "Lewallen;" however, the name is spelled Luallen in the church minutes & in court records.
John Luallen, his wife, Nancy, & daughter, Elizabeth H were received into the Arm of Zion by experience, Nov 1833. They became charter members when the church was instituted in 1834.
When clerk Aaron Baxter was excluded, the church elected John Luallen to take his place. John served as the first clerk after the church was formally instituted in 1834. He was also treasurer in 1836.
In Sept of 1836, John Luallen & his family prepared to move from their Anderson Co home. John & his wife & dau applied for dismission letters from the church. Before they were able to move, John Luallen became ill. He died on Jan 6, 1839.
In April 1839, Nancy Luallen & her daughter, Elizabeth returned their membership to the church. They remained members for several years. Nancy Luallen died in March 1846.
It is not known, where John & Nancy Luallen are buried; however many years after their death, the church held a meeting at "Luallen Graveyard."
John & Nancy Luallen were parents of several children. As heirs of John Luallen, the children's names are mentioned in Anderson Co Deed transfers, 1840 & 1842. Names of children listed from the book.

I don't have any idea to whom their John Robert Babil Lewallen b Abt 1788 belongs but it isn't to Richard Lewallen b 1763 who also died in Anderson Co, TN. Richard Lewallen m 2nd Mar 30, 1793 Norfolk Co, VA to Gracey Stokley; 3rd Jul 01, 1818 Anderson Co, TN to Parazeda Vowell.

If anyone has John Robert Babil Lewallen b Abt 1788 as the son of Richard Lewallen born 1763, please correct your data.
