Descendants of Shadrach Llewellyn and Deborah Burson -- DRAFT
Billie Harris - Dec 5, 2008
This is only a start for the descendants of Shadrach and Deborah (Burson) Llewellyn (spelling of the last name varied.) Much of it is documented and some from paper trails. There are many blanks yet to be filled in and if anyone can help, please do.
NOTE: The spelling of the last name varied as many of ours do.
First is a chronology, followed by the genealogy, followed by sources. Again, if anyone has anything on any of these individuals and where they lived, please post it.

SHADRACH LLEWELLYN and DEBORAH BURSON
Deborah Burson was born 1737 to Joseph and Rachel (Potts) Burson in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Where and when she died is unknown, however, it would seem that it was prior to 1791 when her children asked for dismissal from the Quaker meeting in Washington County, Pennsylvania, since there's no record of her requesting dismissal.
The exact date of the marriage of Deborah and Shadrach isn't known and at this point is only an estimate, however, it must have taken place in a Quaker ceremony, otherwise there would have been written information about Deborah having children out of wedlock. In order for a marriage to have been recognized in the Quaker church, it had to be performed in one although there's no record.
So far nothing is known about Shadrach Llewellyn other than the fact he and Deborah were married and they had children. According to the Potts genealogy, Shadrach was born 1733 which is logical since she was born 1737. He died in Loudoun County, Virginia, 1785 according to Quaker records. There is some question in my mind if the William Lewelling of Randolph County, North Carolina, was a son of Shadrach's but not necessarily a son of Deborah Burson's. If Shadrach was married prior to his marriage to Deborah, then William would have probably been a son. Certainly both families were Quakers and named their children the same names. They even seemed to have traveled to the same general areas and that's where some confusion comes in because of same given names and areas.
CHILDREN:
1. ABEDNEGO LLEWELLYN
1700's - Laying out Nashville Town: Obediah Terrell, Abednego Llewallen (Obediah Terrell was from Old Fincastle County, VA) Note: 1780: Abednego Llewellyn signs as witness (with William Joyner) deed of conveyance between Arthur and Mary Moor of Mobile district, West Florida, and Joshua Howard. In 1798, Joyner deposed that he had witnessed the document in question and that Llewellyn had signed his own name. Recorded in Adams Co Mississippi book A, pp. 12-15.
1783 - Abednego L. arrives at a settlement on the Cumberland River in TN in July of 1783. According to Davidson Co. circuit court minutes, A/14, Mary Framel accused him of fathering her two children. A witness for Llewellyn, James Haggatt, swore that he and Abednego had arrived at the settlement on July 7, 1783, and that Abednego had not visited the place for one or two months previously and could not be the father. The case was eventually dismissed (A/30).
1784 - 5 July: “Abednego Lewallen having been summoned to appear.... To the presentment of the Grand Jury against him for the crime of fornication...appeared and pleaded not guilty on which a jury was called, to wit: Daniel Durnam, Francis Armstrong, Elmore Douglass, Benjamin Kuykendall, John Barrow, John Boyd, Solomon White, Ambrose Maulson, Amos Heaton, Francis Hodges, Humphry Hogan and George Flynn, who being elected tried and sworn sayeth that the said Lewallen and Nancy Snow live together in one house. On which the jury with crew returned and say they do not find the said Lewallen guilty of the crime charges against him in the indictment.”
(County Court Minutes, Volume A, page 24)
Note: The date of Jan. 4, 1787 has also been given as when Abednego was charged with living in adultry and Nancy was charged at the same time as having a bastard child (A/153)
1784 - : Abednego L. buys lot #23 in Nashville from directors and trustees, for four pounds, on 29 July 1784. Davidson Co. Deed Book A, p. 21.
1788 - Benjamin Herndon acquired 4,000 acres on the Duck River. He also owned 3,000 adjoining acres in a partnership with Memman Hunt and he built a home there that he named Sugar Spring Plantation. During the time period of 1791 and 1793 he moved to Newberry County, South Carolina near the present town of Whitmire and established Molihon Plantation. He died 1818/19.
1789 - Abednego Llewellyn killed. According to Gen. James Robertson's ”History of Middle Tennessee” (Nashville 1859), p. 328, "A hunting party, consisting of Colonel Tenen, Evan Shelby, Jun., Abednego Lewellen, and Hugh F. Bell, were in pursuit of game, and fell into an ambush, when the Indians fired and killed Shelby and Lewellen." This account apparently comes from John Haywood's ”The Civil and Political history of the State of Tennessee,” published in 1823, entry for the year 1789. According to an indenture (30 Aug 1810, registered 31 Jan 1811: Davidson Co TN Deed Book I, p. 80) signed by Shadrack Llewellyn of Buncombe Co. NC, "the said Abednego Llewellyn departed this life without issue and without having made any last will or testament."
1789 - Nancy Llewellyn appointed administratrix of Abednego's estate. (A/217) The above information and bastardy records come from Mrs. William T. (Geneva) Mattingly, Rt. 1, Box 206, Marion KY 42064-9729, taken from ”Tennessee Tidbits,” otherwise unidentified, pp. 224-5. NOTE: Nancy Lewellen is shown next in Henderson County, Kentucky as is John Leeper whom she married in KY)
1790 - Davidson Co. TN Will Book 1, p. 136: "The inventory of Abednego Lewellen returned by Nancy Lewellen viz one negro man named Sam, one gray horse paid L 12, four cows, and calves, three hogs and bed, some household furniture." The inventory is undated but appears between two pages dated May 1790
1810 - Shadrach Lewallen deeded the lot (belonging to Abednego) to Frances May and May sold it to Patton soon after. Hynes claimed that Abednigo had deeded the property to John Montgomery, but that the deed had been lost
1811 - 30 Aug Shadrack Llewellyn of Buncombe Co. NC sells his share of this lot as heir of A. Llewellyn (registered 31 Jan 1811. Davidson Co. TN Deed Book, p. 80).
1811 - 21 March, Isaac Llewellen of Nelson Co. KY, and, on 4 April, Meshack Lewallen of Wayne Co. Indiana Territory also sell. Llewellyn appears in the Nelson Co. KY tax lists for 1800, which substitute for the census, and in the 1810 census
2. RACHEL LLEWELLYN JANNEY HATFIELD
Married (1) Abel JANNEY and (2) Jonas HATFIELD. In about 1806 they moved from Washington County, Pennsylvania, to Warren County Ohio. Then in 1810 they moved to Wayne County, Indiana and in 1812 to Greens Fork, village of Washington, Gibson County, Indiana. Abel Janny, Jonas Hatfield and Joshua Binney all apparently moved from one area to the other together and Hatfield and Jenny lived on lands that joined each other. Joshua Binney was one of the two blacksmiths in that area. He settled on Section 27. A block house without a fort was built in war time on or near his farm. ( See source at bottom of page.) Children:
(1) DEBORAH HATFIELD
(2) THOMAS HATFIELD
In about 1825 Thomas Hatfield built a carding machine and fulling-mill near his other omills. After operating them for about a year, he purchased land 1/4 mile below his land from Jesse Bond where he moved his operations, soon after selling them to the Bonds.

Note: There was an Isaac Lawellin in Wells County Indiana 1850. Whether a son of Isaac or not, we haven't determined but from the given names, it would seem this Isaac belonged to this particular family. In going through Llewellyn Traces, December 1989, I noted in Wayne County, Indiana, there was a Deborah Lewallen who married Stephen Jones October 28, 1813 and a Shadrach Lewallen who married Elizabeth Miller October 9, 1817. Since Rachel Llewellyn Janny Hatfield was in Wayne County in 1810, we can assume Deborah and Shadrach were her brother and sister so I'm editing the above to reflect that as being the case.
When even a small piece of a genealogical puzzle is put together, it helps us in tracing the descendants/ancestors, so any help is always appreciated.

I'm also attaching Martha Abbey's reply on another post because she descends from this particular family.
------------------
Martha Abbey - Jan 26, 2009 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item Resa, my line is that of Meshach Lewellen and his wife, Hannah. I think Hannah was a Brooks, but I have no proof. Brooks researchers say no one has found all the data on the Brooks females. Meshach spelled his surname "Lawellen" as early as the late 1700s, and his descendants use that spelling today, My maternal grandmother, Electa Ann Lawellen, was the daughter of Jeptha Lawellen and he the son of Banjamin, son of
Meshach, Meshach was a son of Shadrach Lewellen and his wife Deboraah Burson of the Fairfasx Quaker records. I have my suspisions about Shadrach's parents, but don't have any proof. I have thought the Lewellens of Preble County, Ohio, are connected some way with those (Meshach, et al) of Randolph County, Indiana. Meshach seems to be the brotther of Shadrach of Buncombe County, NC, and Isaac of Nelson County, Kentucky. Benjamin, son of Meshach migrated in the 1840s to Anderson County, Kansas, where there are female descendants today, Meshach, Isaac, and Shadrach seem to be the brothers of Abednego who was killed by Indians (they weren't Native Americans in those days!) in Kentucky and who is mentioned in the "History of Kentucky," Those three brothers quit claimed the lot Abednego bought in
Nashville before he was killed. Abednego's "widow," Nancy Snow married second John Leeper. Unless it has been corrected, DAR records credit the wrong person as John Leeper's wife. I'm sure of these names. but my dates may be off as I'm doing all this from memory. You will hear more from me when I have my records before me.
Best, Martha

I've just read this post about Meshach Lewellen's wife possibly being Hannah Brooks.
Billie wrote on Jan 27, 2009:

Oddly enough, I'm a Brooks descendant and have been intrigued by one of my Brooks' ancestors, Pleasant Mack Brooks b 1827 Cocke Co, TN who named one of his sons, Luallen Emory Brooks. We do not know who Pleasant Mack Brooks parents were but are actively searching. And, now to find this much earlier possibility of a Brooks/ Llewellyn connection makes it even more interesting.
And, again, Buncombe Co, NC is of particular interest to me in my Brooks research. My gr. grandfather, James David Brooks (Jul 1866 TN) md Lora Hoglen (Jul 1871 Haywood Co, NC). Haywood Co, NC was originally part of Buncombe Co, NC.
My Brooks were Quakers originating w/ Matthew Brooks in Frederick Co, VA who married Elizabeth Warren about 1735.

4. ANN LLEWELLYN
From "Virginia Quaker Records": "...Lewellen, Ann, daughter of Shadrach and Deborah (Burson) Lewellin 'who hath removed sometime ago over the Alleghany Mountains' granted certificate to Hopewell MM, Frederick County, Va. 27 Aug. 1785, clear. (Note: This certificate was received by Westland MM, P.A. which was in Washington County, Pennsylvania.)
David Brooks, one of Matthew's son, was a prominent Quaker and left the Cedar Creek MM, VA in 1767 and moved to New Garden MM in NC. He remained there and raised his family. His brothers, Joel and James Brooks, both were Quakers. Joel died young in 1764 in Cane Creek MM, NC. Perhaps this was the reason David moved from VA to NC - to help raise his brother's young family. James was much younger than Joel and David and married Joel's sister-in-law, Sarah Wright, in 1868 in NC.
From NC, the Brooks moved further south into SC where my Brooks were born. By the early 1820s, they had moved north into Cocke Co, TN where most of them raised their families. Cocke Co, TN borders Madison Co, NC where Pleasant Mack Brooks sons moved after their father died. Of course, Madison Co, NC was originally part of Buncombe Co, NC in earlier times. So, this makes a Luallen connection to Shadrach all that much stronger.
I'm out of time today, but I'll keep looking to see if we can locate a present-day, living Shadrach Lewallen descendant. If anyone can possibly help with this search, we might be able to find one before our promotional pricing runs out Dec 31st!
Thanks, Carol

What does this mean? 1786 - Rachel HATFIELD, formerly Lewellin, condemned her breach of chastity.
Sue Cooper - Dec 20, 2010
Resa,
Perhaps you have already found your answer and I am certainly no expert on Quakers. However, was Rachel's husband, Hatfield, a Quaker? If not, then it was probably referring to her marrying someone outside of the Quaker religion.
Carol Redd - Dec 21, 2010

I found a Google Book excerpt on this "breach of chastity". This reference seems to be saying that if a man defiles an unmarried woman, then he is required to marry her and they shall agree to live as husband and wife as they are unfit to live with anyone else. If the man refused to marry the woman, then it seems like she would be condemned by the "Friends" and not been allowed to continue to worship in their meetings.
Cut and past the following to read it: (read it realizing that they made "s" look like "f", but not consistently)

Martha Abbey (above) descends from this line but she wasn't/isn't aware of any male Lewallen from this line who could test for us. I believe one of her posts indicates she though this family was Flewelling originally

Is it possible Samuel Lewellin was somehow connected to this family? The reason i ask is because I came across a copy of an old e-mail (1999) from a woman who was researching Samuel. He married Hannah Jones sometime after 1732. She said Samuel and Hannah moved to Loudoun and from there on to Monongalia County, West Virginia in 1769. One of Samuel's sons was named Doctor and Doctor's daughter Martha married a Fowler. One of Martha Fowler's sons was named William Shadrick Fowler.
In the Search History blank above, type in Virginia and scroll down to the posting entitled "Virginia - Chronology." If you look at what there is for Loudoun, you'll see Samuel is there at the same time as Shadrach and Deborah Burson.
There's a chance Shadrach and Deborah are related to Samuel.

Billie, In a timeline of Lewellens in early Loudon Co. (Did you make this timeline?), I find: 1785, Feb 10 - Goose Creek Monthly Meeting Shadrach Luellen buried 10 Feb 1785 Goose Creek Graveyard.
This is the Friend's (Quaker) Meeting House of which I recently sent in a picture. I did not send a picture of the graveyard, but I have one if anyone is interested. I spoke to the custodian who now lives in the old meeting house. (The new one is across the street.) He told me that there are no legible gravestones from the 1700's in the graveyard.
This meeting house is about 5 miles from the property of Thomas Lewellen (the picture of the spring house.)
The early records of this Monthly Meeting show Thomas Lewellen and Shadrack Lewellen.
The early tithing records (in a posting by Diane Livingston, 22 Aug 2009 on this website) show which tithing men lived in the same household. Shadrack is always alone - he first tithes in 1760.
Thomas first tithes in 1749 (when it was still Fairfax Co.)
Appearing with Thomas in this order are:
1761 Samuel
1762 Filip
As the tithing records go on they show

This looks very much like the list of sons of Samuel Lewellen who married the widow Jones and ferried the Cheat River in Western Virginia.
I personally think (guess) Thomas was the father of the long list of boys. I also think (guess) that Shadrack, Thomas, and Samuel were brothers or cousins, and that both Thomas and Samuel had sons named Thomas and Samuel, all with connections to Loudoun Co, VA.
I would love to have others' opinions on all this!

Landy, I tend to agree with you that the men tithing were probably sons of Samuel but Samuel doesn't tithe after 1761, or at least he isn't in the list. I suppose it's possible he died about that time.
I'm inclined to think a Thomas was the father of Shadrach.
Take a look here and see what you think.

Sorry, Billie, I wasn't clear. Instead of Samuel being the father of those boys ending in Doctor, I believe their father was Thomas.
By the way, I read somewhere that Doctor was "D'octor", meaning "the eighth."
