Thomas Mathew Luallin (b 1809 NC d 1850 Fulton Co Ark), Robert, Jesse, Henry (KY)
Billie Harris - Dec 10, 2008
I need some help. Do any of you have a Thomas Mathew Luallin or Robert Luallin in your line? Or a Jesse who might have been their father or brother? Thomas Mathew and Robert were brothers. I've had an inquiry from Bill Luallin whom I've asked if he'd like to join us and so far he hasn't replied. The spelling differs in census records although Bill says the name was spelled Luallin.
Thomas, who went by Mathew, was born 1809 in North Carolina. He is probably the one showing in the 1840 census in Izard County, Arkansas, as "Mathew Lewallen" because Fulton County where the family lived and where he died was formed from Izard County 1842. Also in Izard County's 1840 census was a Jesse Lewallen. Even before then, however, the Wayne County, Kentucky tax list shows three men, marked as delinquent in paying their 1831 Kentucky taxes, had gone to Tennessee: Jesse Luellen, Henry Luellen, Mathew Luellen. ("1831 Wayne County, Kentucky, Delinquent Tax List" by C. L. Coffey.)
The family lived in Fulton County, Arkansas. He died in 1850. His wife was Lucy Laura (Cole) Luallin (spelled various ways) born 1807 and their children were: Levi born 1824, George 1830, Andrew 1833, Jessie T. 1835, Henry P. 1838, Lucinda 1839, John H. 1841 and Alexander 1845. By 1860 the family had moved to Laclede County, Kentucky and are shown in Brush Creek township in a household with many individuals - Risley, Farris, Morris, Moody, Russell, so it was probably a boarding house. Why they moved to Laclede County isn't known.
Levi, the son, moved to California in 1850 and worked in the gold mines. He wrote a letter and mentioned Fort Scott, Missouri, on May 17, 1850, then his second letter was October 1850, when he mentioned the Mokelumne River and being about 25 miles from Sacramento working in the gold mine with fellows by the names of Serton, and Charles Serton and Will Roll. That was the last time the family heard from him.
Can any of you help? Do any of you have a Mathew with a brother Robert. Jesse could have been a brother, too, or he may have been a father. I don't have access to a paid subscription to Ancestry or any of the other sites to check the 1840 census to see if Jesse and Mathew lived near each other in Izard County or to check their ages and the ages of their family.
