Ann V. Lewellyn, "Half-Breed" Mississippi 1831

Billie Harris - Jan 23, 2009

Think you have Indian in your ancestry?   Do you have ancestors in Mississippi (probably Amite County) about 1831?   Here's a posting on GenForum and it names Ann V. Lewellyn as a "half breed" woman.

So that I won't forget myself why I was researching the Fosters, it was because the middle name of one of the children of the Gloucester County, Virginia, Llewellyns (a descendant of Christopher Llewellyn)   was Foster and I was trying to see if that might have been the mother's surname since we don't have it.

Since I posted my thinking on the Choctaw Fosters, I have learned that many of my conclusions were about as wrong as they could possibly be. For that, I apologize. My reasons for this about face are based on the fact that I've uncovered a vast amount of new information that clarifies and validates much of what is known about Moses Foster and Oti-masha. For example, below is a list taken from the petition of Choctaws wishing to remain in Mississippi, 1831. This list answers some questions. Not the least being that Moses' children were indeed half-breeds.

One question that it does not answer is just who was the John Foster who had a Choctaw wife in Amite Co., MS in 1789?

"In 1789 John Foster with his Indian wife settled on a Spanish land grant along the stream that today bears his name, becoming the first recorded white settler in Amite county." Pg. 72, Liberty & Amite County Sesqui-centennial 1809-1959.
