Anderson Lewallen's mother (Rice)
Billie Harris - Jan 29, 2009
Since the Anderson Lewallen born about 1764 is the first known person in the Lewallen family with that given name, is it possible his mother was a Rice?
Charles Rice, wife Frances, died about 1779 in Prince Edward County VA. His children were ANDERSON, MATTHEW, Susannah, Rowlett, Charles and Frances. Matthew was comehow related to Lucy Rice who married Anderson Lewallen (father or brother or uncle ?, I can't recall offhand.) It could be Frances, wife of Charles, was an Anderson herself, thus their son was named after her surname; just a possibility and certainly would need research.
We have the document showing an Anderson Rice:
1789 - RICE to CHALWELL
28 Jul 1789 Power of Attorney
Deed Book 1 - Page 131
Submitted by Anne Baker
ANDERSON RICE of Mercer Co., Va(I believe that should read Mercer Co., KY) For good causes appoints his true friend Charles Chalwell his lawful attorney to sue for, receive, or recover of the person who is in possession of a tract of land in Prince Edward Co.,
containing 175 acres & which belonged to the father of Anderson Rice, Charles Rice, deceased, and same which said Anderson claims as heir at law of said Charles Rice, since he is the eldest son.
Signed: Anderson Rice Wit: William McDowell, Samuel McDowell, Nathan Rice
Even before that though, we have an Icay in Prince Edward County with a Charlie Lewelling:
1771 - 22 Nov Thomas Morton Jr, parish St Patrick, county Prince Edward, to John Richards of same, for 40 pounds, 134 acres of land on lower side of Sandy River in Prince Edward County adjoining Gravelly?s line & lands sd Richards bought from William Davidson; this is part of land granted to Royal & John Sutton Bowman sold to George Morton and then to sd Thomas. Signed: Thomas (his mark X wiggly) Morton. Wit: ICAY RICE, MAIDEN RICE, CHARLEY LEWELLING. Recorded 18 May 1772. (Prince Edward County VA Deeds, Vol 4, p 182)"
Who was the Charles/Charley Lewelling in 1771? His is the first of the Lewallen/Lewellings listed in Prince Edward County although according to records, Richard Lewallen was born there 1762/3. Within three years - 1781-4 three Lewallens are mentioned in Prince Edward County - Richard, William and Anderson. Richard was named in his father (Daniel's) will of 1785 and it doesn't appear he lived right next to the others, however, William, Anderson and Jesse Lewallen and Matthew Rice lived right next to each other. Were they connected to Charles Lewallen of 1771?

And please pay particular attention to the Rice family in this posting.

All this time I though Margaret Llewellyn Rice was Anderson's sister. Now it looks like she was an aunt. Or...could it be she was a widow Llewellyn who married a Rice?

And --
1788 - Prince William County, THOMAS LEWELLING died and in his Will named his niece, Liddia Rice, daughter of Matthew and MARGARET Rice.
Would that make Thomas an uncle or great uncle of Anderson's? I had thought they were brothers but now am not sure.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have it a bit differently in my records.Thomas Lewellin (Jr. I am fairly certain) left his will in October 1787 in Prince Edward County leaving his entire estate to his niece, Alice, daughter of Matthew and Margaret Rice. That appears to make Margaret Thomas's daughter. Matthew was Matthew Rice Jr. In my research, Charles Rice was the brother of Matthew Rice Jr. Charles appears to be the father of Lydia Lucy Rice, the wife of Anderson. To me, it does not suggest any relationship between Anderson and Thomas. I will agree that Thomas was probably a great uncle of Anderson's.

Ooops. I did mean Prince Edward County and not Prince William.
I can't seem to find that Alice Rice was named and, in fact, can only find one Alice Rice listed in the Rice genealogy and she was born 1700. Maybe there was another and what I copied was wrong.
The information was taken from the book I did in the 80's. It shows:
Will Book 2 (1785-1795) of Prince Edward County, page 35 shows:
Last Will and Testament of Thomas Lewelling, dated October 28, 1787, and proved Oct. 20, 1788, reads in part: “To my niece, Liddia Rice, daughter of Mathew and Margaret Rice, my gray mare, money from my crops…”
Same Will Book, page 41, shows:
Will of John Lewelling dated Oct. 29, 1787, and proved in June 1788 reads in part: “My land to be sold and the money arising to be given to my brother Jesse Lewelling, when he comes of age…if he dies then to my brothers, Claiborne Lewelling, and Moses Lewelling…my executor my father Jesse Lewelling.”
Same Will Book, page 101 shows:
Will of William Lewelling, dated Feb. 10, 1790, and proved July 19, 1790…”My land to my wife, Hannah Lewelling, and at her death to my two sons, Enoch and Aaron Lewelling.
If you have information showing Alice, please let me know because it could be I copied it wrong.

I found this on the Rice Family. It has 918 pages, go to page 446-450 for the Rice family, also next after that is a photo of Richard Rice. Book covers several familes. If you want to check out other families other than Rice, you can download entire book with link under each page. Since it is so large allow extra time for download.
