Arrests made
The sheriff of Randolph County announced the arrests of three people in connection with two murders that took place on Aug. 4.

ASHEBORO -- Randolph County Sheriff Maynard Reid says he feels confident about the arrests of three people in connection with the murders of 44-year-old Bobby Lewallen and 77-year-old Charles Winfred Ward.

Lewallen was murdered in his Trinity home on Aug. 4. A few days later, Ward was shot to death in his home in Asheboro. Ward's wife was knocked unconscience during the attack but she has recovered.

"We're assuming the motive for this thing is money, drugs or both," Sheriff Reid said about the murders.

Deputies arrested Steven Holcomb, 29, of Seagrove, N.C. on Aug. 14 and charged him with a long list of offenses, the most serious of which are first-degree murder in the Ward case, attempted first-degree murder, as well as robbery charges.

The following day, Derrick Letterlough and Mandy Holcomb York were arrested. Letterlough is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for both the murder of Ward and Lewallen, attempted first-degree murder and other charges. York, who is Holcomb's sister and Letterlough's girlfriend, is charged with accessory after the fact of first-degree murder.

Despite the arrests, Sheriff Reid says he can't give much information on the investigation.

"It's still ongoing, you know, we're still gathering evidence. We had [enough] evidence to charge these people. We know they did it. We're just trying to make sure that we have everything together."

All three suspects are being held at the Randolph County Jail.
