                               SUMMARIES

Following is a summary of the Wills and estates, followed by more detailed information.


VIRGINIA

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, VIRGINIA

1663 -     DANIEL LLEWELLYN's Will.   Wife Ann, Daughters Martha Jones and Margaret Crews.   Son Daniel Lewallen.   Stepson Robert Hallam.

1695 -   JOHN STITH died and in his will named his daughter Jane, wife of Capt. DANIEL LUELLEN.

1710 -     Extract from DANIEL LLEWELLIN's Will bequeathing "Rich Level" plantation to his grandson Llewellin Epses.   (Extract sent to Charles Carter.)

1809 - Frederick Jones Will.   Inventoried by John W. Mayo and JOHN LEWELLING, executors

1811 - Ann Jones, widow of William Jones released to JOHN LEWELLING, guardian of orphans of her late husband.   (Note:   I believe that Ann Jones married John Lewelling...bh)



NORFOLK COUNTY, VIRGINIA

1710 - WILLIAM OWEN's Will.   Names brothers in law, Edward Davis, Richard Taylor, and RICHARD LEWELLING.   The Will also mentions land joining EDWARD LEWELLING and it names sons, including John Owens.

1722 - RICHARD LEWELLING's Will.   Names wife Elizabeth (she would be Owens..bh), sons RICHARD LEWELLING, ABEL LEWELLING, LEMUEL LEWELLING, EDWARD LEWELLING, and said he has five daughters.

1750 - ABEL LEWELLING (this would be Richard's son...bh).   Will names wife Sarah (probably Manning) and seven children:   ___hard (probably RICHARD LEWELLING, DANAI (probably DANIEL) LEWELLING, ABEL LEWELLING, JOHN LEWELLING, PAUL LEWELLING, ELIZABETH LANGLEY, FRANCES LEWELLING   (note, part of the Will was either torn or difficult to read)

1751 - WILLIAM LEWELLING's Will.   Names wife Frances (died Edgecombe County, North Carolina), and children:   JOHN LEWELLING, SARAH LEWELLING, FRANKE LEWELLING, ANNAS LEWELLING, ANNA LEWELLING, CHLOE LEWELLING, LIDDIA LEWELLING, ABBE LEWELLING.   the witness for this Will, among others, was John Owens (see 1722 Will of Richard Lewelling)

1752 - EDWARD LEWELLING's Will.   Wife Margaret (Manning).   Children:   THOMAS LEWELLING, LEWIS LEWELLING, BENJAMIN LEWELLING, EDWARD LEWELLING, JOHN LEWELLING, ELIZABETH BUSTION, LYDDA EWELL, MARY LEWELLING, LETISHA LEWELLING, LETTAS LEWELLING

1755 - JOHN MANNING names among others daughters SARAH LEWELLING and LETTE LEWELLING.   (In the 1762 audit it showed some to ABEL LEWELLEN)

1761 - RICHARD LEWELLING's Will.   (Son of Abel and Sarah, see 1750).   Wife Alice (died 1765), wife's granddaughter, Mary Holmes.   Cousins Richard and Eliza Inkson.   Brothers:   JOHN LEWELLING, ABEL LEWELLING, PAUL LEWELLING, sister ELIZA LANGLEY

1762 - SARAH LEWELLING, inventory of estate.

1773 - BENJAMIN LEWELLING'S Will.   No information for this.   (see 1752)

1778 - JOHN LEWELLING's Will.   No information for this.   (see 1752)



AMELIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA

1752 - THOMAS LEWELLIN, inventory of estate.   Settlement mentions JESSE LEWELLING, Charles Burk, Richard Burk, William Craddock.   (NOTE:   No Thomas nor Jesse mentioned in records prior to this.)

1752 - RICHARD LEWELLIN in Wills and Administration (possibly son of Richard and Elizabeth 1722 ??? )


PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, VIRGINIA
(formed from Amelia County)

1785 - DANIEL LEWELLEN's Will .     Names wife Mary, son RICHARD LEWELLEN was executor.   Witnesses included Edmund D. Todd and Zachariah Rice

1787 - THOMAS LEWELLING's Will.   Names niece, Lydia Rice, daughter of Matthe and Margaret (Lewelling) Rice.   Executor was Matthe Rice.   Witnesses were Edmund D. and Eliza Todd (see Will of Daniel, 1785, above, same witnesses.)

1787 - JOHN LEWELLEN's Will.   Brothers:   JESSE LEWELLEN (under age), CLARBORNE LEWELLEN and MOSES LEWELLEN.   Father:   JESSE LEWELLEN, executor.   Witnesses:   Edmund Todd (see 1785 and 1787 above), NANCEY LEWELLIN and NANNY LEWELLEN

1790 - WILLIAM LEWELLING's Will.   Wife Hannah (Smith), executor.   Sons:   ENOCH LEWELLING, AARON LEWELLING.   Witnesses:   Zachariah Rice, Thoams Rice, Thomas Howerton.   (Note Zachariah Rice witnessed Daniel's Will in 1785)


BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA

1826 -   MARY LEWELLEN's Will named son WILLIAM A. LEWELLEN and Lucy Oliver's children.



NORTH CAROLINA

EDGECOMBE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

1792 - ALEXANDER LEWELLING'S Will.   Wife Elizabeth.   Sons:   EDMUND LEWELLING, JAMES LEWELLING, JOHN LEWELLING, SIMON LEWELLING.   Daughter FANNIE LEWELLING.   Son-in-law:   Benjamin Ammason.   Witnesses:   JAMES LEWELLING and Edmund Stucky

1794 - LEWELLING, JOHN, SENR, inventory taken by JOHN LEWELLING and William Wallace, Nov. 19, 1794. Nov. Ct.

1794 -(see 1813 below) Petition by Clara Southerland for division by John Southerland admr. of the deceased, who states that John William Llewellyn died testate in 1794 bequeathing certain furniture and negroes for her lifetime with reversion to their daughters at her death. Record indicates the widow Mary Llewellyn, survived her husband fourteen years and her property was to be divided among her seven daughters, namely;
(1). Mary, now widow of Benjamin Bowers of Pitt Co.
(2). Chloe, wife of William Bowers of Pitt Co.
(3). Clara, wife of John Southerland, who survived the said John.
(4). Charlotte, wife of Arthur Staton.
(5). Gracy, wife of John Mooring of Pitt Co.
(6). Annie, wife of William Moore of Pitt Co
(7). Susannah Mooring, now wife of Nathan Mayo (Jr.).

1797 -   in Edgecombe   “Grimes, Thomas.   Inventory taken by Thos. Grimes and J. LEWELLING June 5, 1797, Aug. Ct. 1797.   Account current with JOHN LEWELLING and Thomas Grimes, exrs.   A legacy was paid to John Grimes (May Ct. 1799)."

1797 - THOMAS GRIMES' Will.   Note:   He married Chloe Lewelling, daughter of William and Francis Lewelling.   Inventory taken by Thomas Grimes and JOHN LEWELLING

1802 - JOHN SOUTHERLAND's Will.   JOHN LEWELLING was administrator of his estate and John and Mary Lewelling were noticeable buyers.

1809 - FREDERICK JONES' Will.   Inventory taken by John W. Mayo and JOHN LEWELLING, executors.

1811 - ANN JONES, widow of William Jones, deceased, released to JOHN LEWELLING, guardian of the orphans of her late husband...

1813 - (see 1794 above) SOUTHERLAND, CLARA; Petition (May 1813) for division by John Southerland admr. of the deceased, who states that John William Llewellyn died testate in 1794 bequeathing certain furniture and negroes for her lifetime with reversion to their daughters at her death. 1820 - ANN LEWELLING, widow of JOHN LEWELLING

1822 - NANCY LEWELLING with STEPHEN LEWELLING and WILLIAM LEWELLING asking for distribution of late WILLIAM LEWELLING (Stephen and William were 'infants of tender years" to whom John Mooring had been appointed guardian.

1829 - Distribution of land between WILLIAM LEWELLING and STEPHEN LEWELLING (see 1822)


HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

1786 - WILLIAM FLEWELLEN's Will.   Wife Betsy (Halloway).   Children:   JAMES FLEWELLEN, HOWELL FLEWELLEN, WILLIAM FLEWELLEN, TAYLOR FLEWELLEN, ALEXANDER FLEWELLEN, ABNER FLEWELLEN, SHADRACH FLEWELLEN, NANCY FLEWELLEN

1797 - RICHARD FLEWELLEN JR's Will.   Had a wife, not named.   Children:   OBADIAH FLEWELLEN, THOMAS FLEWELLEN, RICHARD FLEWELLEN and granddaughter MARY FLEWELLEN (daughter of Richard).

1818 - RICHARD FLEWELLEN's Will.   Wife Elizabeth.   Children:   MARSEY FLEWELLEN, PRISLER FLEWELLEN, POLLY MATTHEWS, EATON FLEWELLEN, PATSY SHERRING.   Executor, friend Isham Matthews.



JOHNSTON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

JOHN FLEWELLEN, son of RICHARD of Charles City and Prince George Counties, died.   His wife was MARY HOBBY.   His son JAMES was to have the large bible.   Sons:   HOWELL, JAMES, WILLIAM, TAYLOR, ALEXANDER and ABNER and William were executors and witnesses were   Isham Roses (?) and Rebecca Parham


MARTIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

1775 - Will of John Jackson named JOHN LEWELLING as executor.   The will was witnessed by WILLIAM LEWELLING

1793 - Will of JOHN LEWELLING names wife's daughters Mary Bowers, Chloe Bowers, Charlotte Staton, Gracey Mooring, Anness More, Susannah Mooring and son John Lewelling.   Executors:   son John Lewelling, Nathan Mayo and William Wallace



RANDOLPH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

1798 - WILLIAM LEWELLING's Will.   Wife Mary, children:   JOSEPH LEWELLING, JONATHAN LEWELLING, WILLIAM LEWELLING, JOHN LEWELLING, JEAN TURNER, THOMAS LEWELLING, SHADRICK LEWELLING, MASHACK LEWELLING, MARY LEWELLING.

1826 - ALFRED LEWALLYN died and left no Will.   His widow was Rachel but her name was also given as Sarah.   There were children.   JONATHAN LEWALLEN was administrator of the estate.

1835 - THOMAS BROOKSHIRE's Will names among others a daughter JANE LUALLEN

1848 - JONATHAN LEWALLEN'S Will.   Wife Jane.   Children:   McLARIN LEWALLEN, DAWSON LEWALLEN, JOHN LEWALLEN, ELIZABETH LAX, MARY LUTHOR, JANE ?   , SARAH RAMSOWEN, REBECCA SLACK, I ?   LEWALLEN, LAVINIA HANCOCK, ANN LEWALLEN

1850 - JANE LEWALLEN's Will.   (wife of Jonathan who died 1848).   Eldest daughter ANN LEWALLEN, eldest son DAWSON LEWALLEN, daughter LAVINA HANCOCK, son JOHN LEWALLEN.   (question:   were the other children in Jonathan's Will hers or were they from a previous marriage of Jonathan's...bh)

1861 - MC LARIN LEWALLEN had died.   ..."To... McLaren Lewallen, decd in the hands of HENRY LEWALLEN, his executor....(McLaren had sued R. R. Jones).   (McLarin was born December 15, 1797 and died March 8, 1861; he was the son of Jonathan born april 7, 1769 and died June 4, 1848.   Jonathan would have been the son of William Lewelling who died 1799).

1870 - Stephen Henley appointed guardian of SALLIE A. LEWALLEN and WILLIAM L. LEWALLEN, minor orphans of WILLIS B. LEWALLEN, deceased



ANSON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

1840 - JESSE LEWELLEN had died by this time and his wife was Dorcas who made a deed.

1842 - DORCAS LEWELLEN's Will named son ALFRED LEWELLEN (see Randolph County), daughters SALLY LEWELLEN, JEMINA BIVENS, MARY HOUGH, ELIZABETH BENNETT, sons ISAAC LEWELLEN, JESSE LEWELLEN, AMON LEWELLEN, ELLIS LEWELLEN, WILLIAM LEWELLEN, grandsons JESSE B. LEWELLEN and BENJAMIN F. LEWELLEN.


TERRELL COUNTY, NORTH CROLINA

1770 - Nov. 29.   FRANCES LEWELLING of Tyrrell County named husband John and children John, Anna, Chloe, Lyddia, Abbey, and grandchildren William Manning, Willis Culpepper and Fanny Culpepper.   Witnesses:   James Sherrod, Lydia Sherrod and Robert Sherrod.




MARYLAND

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, MARYLAND

1719 -Will of Thomas Orrell (Orrill, Orlie), Gent 25 Aug and filed May 1721.   Daughter JANE LEWELLIN, son-in-law RICH'D LEWELLIN, ex. grandson JOHN LEWELLIN and grand-dau. MARGTT LEWELLIN grandson Rich'd Rodger.   Witness included RICH'D LEWELLIN

1722 - Richard Lewellin died.

1722 - Will of JANE LLEWELLIN, widow of Charles County 7th Aug, proved Dec. 1722.   Daughtr MARGARET to be cared for by Mrs. Jane Doyne.   Son JOHN to be cared for by Mr. William Chandler.  


ST. MARY'S COUNTY, MARYLAND

1677 -   Will of John Jones of St. Mary's County 5 Oct, proven 6 Nov..   Witnesses Jno Turlinge and JNO LEWELLIN

1693 - Will of Lyonell Copley, St. Mary's 7 Sept and proven 23 Sept.   One of witnesses was JNO LEWELLIN

Date unknown - Will of Thomas Grunwyn gives among other bequests to RICHARD LLEWELLIN.   Richard Llewellin was also one of the witnesses.

1711 - Will of William Taylord 8 Oct and poven Jan.   Son-in-law RICHARD LLEUELLIN to assist wife in executorship.   (Note Richard would have been his stepson, not his son-in-law.   Note that in the Will of Audry Taylord 1721 she refers to him as her son and in the Will of Thomas Orell of Charles County 1719 he refers to Richard as his son-in-law and Orell's daughter was Jane.(It would appear Audrey (maiden name unknown) married a Llewellyn who died and then she married William Taylord.   Obviously Audrey had just one son with her Llewellyn husband, a son named Richard.   Richard married Jane Orell and they had a son John and a daughter Margaret

1721 - Will of Audrey Taylord.   To son RICHARD LEWELLIN, grandosn JOHN LEWELLIN, granddaughter MARGARET LEWELLIN, William Harrison, Ann wife of John Baker and her son, Jon Baker and Elinor, wife of William Langley.  

1777 - Will of James Eden, St. Mary's County.   "To two cousins MARY and MARGRET LWELLIN and Elizabeth Briscoe.   One of the witnesseswas CHARLES LLEWELLIN.

TALBOT COUNTY


1701 -   Will of John Price of Talbot Co., 8th Feb. 1701-02 21st Nov. 1702 shows his wife Margery and MORRIS LEWELLIN as executors

1726 - Will of Charles Stevens, proved 22nd May 1728.   “To dau. Katherine and hrs. 212 A. “LLEWELLIN'S RIDGE”, e. side Tuckahoe Ck, bou of Esp. Loyd.

1732 - Will of William Hooke, St. Mary’s Co. 20th Jan. 1732-3, 2d April 1733, “To Richard Rogers and John and MARGARET LEWELLIN, l.s. each…”

1733 - Will of John Briscoe, Charles Co. 13th Jan. 1733, 8 Apr 1734, one of the testators was MARGARET LLEWELLYN
