Descendants of Texas Lewellen
Generation No. 1
1. TEXAS7 LEWELLEN (JOHN6, ANDERSON "GRANT"5 LEWALLEN, DANIEL
ALEXANDER "LLEWELLYN"4 LEWELLEN, DANIEL3 LLEWELLYN,JR, DANIEL2, JOHN1)
was born April 17, 1870 in Wayne CO., KY, and died October 6,1946 in
Taylor Co., TX. She married CATLETT BASCOMB HURT November 9,1889 in Bell
Co., TX, son of CATLETT G. HURT and ELIZABETH REED. He was born May 30,
1865 in Montgomery Co., ARK, and died April 11, 1944 in Taylor Co., TX.
Notes for TEXAS LEWELLEN:
The story has been told in our family that when John Lewellen and
Emely Reed McDonald Lewellen were coming to Texas they crossed the
Mississippi River on a flatboat or raft. Their two daughters, Tennessee
and Texas, were quite small. Somewhere in the middle of the river, Texas
took off one of her black patent-leather shoes and threw it into the
river! I would imagine this incident was remembered and re-told because
a new pair of shoes did not come easily. Texas Lewellen Hurt was a very
quiet person. Her oldest daughter Tennie (named for Texas's sister, Tennessee)
said one time that when her mother, Texas, DID speak, you knew it was
important! Texas was converted early in life and she united with the
Methodist Church and was a member of the Shep Church. She was very active
in Church work and was most interested in the work of Sunday School.
When the family came to Taylor County, Texas in 1879, John Lewellen
staked their claim on 160 acres. This land was divided later and deeded
to each of his daughters, Texas and Tennessee. They lived in a dugout for
awhile and later John Lewellen built a one room house close to the dugout
living there before going back to Bell Co. around 1886. Texas and Tennessee
both attended school in a one room log cabin on Spring Creek. When they
returned to Bell Co. in 1886, Texas met and married Catlett Bascomb Hurt,
Nov. 9, 1889. C. B. Hurt rode his horse from Paris, Tx. down to Bell Co.
Their three oldest Children were born in Bell Co. All of the family moved
back to Taylor Co. in 1893. the one room house was moved up on the hill
away from Spring creek and more rooms were added. This became the home of
Texas and Catlett Bascomb, where they raised all nine of their children.
John and Emely, along with Tennessee had a one room house moved in on the
land that was deeded to Tennessee, living out their remaining years there.
I once heard my Mother, Albany Hurt Ballard say that her grandfather,
John Lewellen was so feeble in his later years, that he had to be hoisted up
onto the seat of his plow to farm his land.
One of the stories told while the family lived in the dugout, was that
Texas Lewellen recalled standing in the doorway of the dugout and watching
several Indians straggle by. The Indians had been defeated physically and
spiritually-- they were no threat to the settlers.
