LOUDOUN COUNTY, VIRGINIA - Chronology

Billie Harris - Aug 23, 2009

This incorporates what Diane Langston provided with what we already have.   Any and all comments and theories will be appreciated.   Basically, it's about Loudoun and those Lewellyn, Lewallen, Luellen, etc. who were in that county.   Since Loudoun was formed 1757 from Fairfax, first is what we have for that county.

FAIRFAX
Created 1742 from Prince William

1749 - tithable - Tho. Lewellin, Tithable1 (note: Wife Quaker, Upper Parish                 Cameron)
Re Upper Parish Cameron:
Cameron Parish of Fairfax and Loudoun was established in 1749, divided from Truro Parish, and a 1752 act of the Assembly described the division of Truro and Cameron as "… divided by Difficult Run and its meanders from the mouth to the head thereto, and from thence by a line to the head of Pope's head Run and thence down the said run… to the mouth thereof, and that all… situate on the lower side should be… Truro and all other part thereof… Cameron…" (6 Hening 271). Note: The above line crossed Fairfax Co approx. NNE and SSW. In 1757 when Loudoun was formed from Fairfax, most of Cameron fell into Loudoun Co, and in 1762, the General Assembly decreed that all that part of Cameron that "lies below the present established lines" be reunited with Truro Parish. (7 Hening 612). See Also Next re Shelburne Parish for additional.

Hannah wife of John BRADFIELD received on certificate from the Fairfax MM, Loudoun Co., VA dated November 25, 1795. It states that she was living in Campbell Co., VA for considerable time and condemned the conduct for which she stood disowned. Hannah was a daughter of George & Sarah (COX) BURSON of Loudoun Co., VA. Moreover, she is also more than likely not the mother of John's three children who came under the care of the Friends at Campbell Co., VA. There is a document purporting to be a transcript of the family bible for this family, copies of which are in circulation among descendants researching John BRADFIELD. In trying to piece these families together, let's see what we have on them.   PLEASE share your findings or thoughts and help with the questions.

BURSON.

We know Deborah Burson married Shadrach Lewallen and Deborah is first mentioned 1759.
1760 Benjamin Burson married Ann Roberts.   Witnesses to the marriage were Shadrick and Thomas Lewellin   (Benjamin Burson was Deborah's brother; they were children of Joseph Burson)
1769 Benjamin Burson's Will mentions his father, Joseph
1772 - Benjamin Burson married Hannah Young.   Witness was Thomas Lewellin
(This Benjamin Burson had to have been the son of Benjamin who died 1769, and would have been Deborah Burson Lewellen's nephew)
1773 - The will of Henry Oldaker Sr mentions, among others, two daughters, Rebeckah Burson and Mary Lewellin
1773 - A tithable is Amos Burson
1782 - Benjamin Burson's property is mentioned in a transaction involving Thomas Lewellin and Andrew Grammar.   Witnesses included John Lewellen and Samuel Lewellen
1795 - Hannah Bradfield, living in Campbell County for sometime, was the wife of John Bradfield and daughter of George and Sarah Burson.

SAMUEL LEWELLEN

Documents first mention him 1761 as a tithable, then again 1764
1782 - He's a witness to an property transaction involving Thomas Lewellen and Andrew Grammar.   Other witnesses were John Lewellen and John Evans.

Supposedly, Samuel and his family lived in Loudoun until the 1770s and then moved to Monongalia County, West Virginia.   His wife was Hannah (maiden name unknown) Jones, a widow.   Their children (documented) were Phillip, Jacob, Benjamin, Thomas, David, Asa, Mary, Samuel and Doctor.   Phillip is shown as a tithable 1765 and 1767 and then there's no moe record for him.   The descendants of this family is confusing if you also look at what we have in Pennsylvania under "chronology."

QUESTION:
1.   Since Samuel Lewellen moved ca 1770 to Monongalia County, who was the Samuel in 1782?
2.   Did some of Samuel's family move to Washington County, Pennsylvania?
   (See Pennsylvania - Chronology)
3.   What happened to descendants of Shadrach and Deborah Lewellen's children?   They had Isaac, Ann, Margaret, Meshek, Deborah, Mary, and Hannah.   Although they aren't mentioned in records, they (or at least he) also had Shadrach and Abednego.
Abednego helped lay out the City of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee early 1780;s and was killed by Indians 1789. Although he was married, he must have left no children because his brothers sold his land.
Shadrach, lived in Buncombe County, N.C. at the time.
Meshek lived in Wayne County, Indiana,.
Isaac lived in Nelson County, Kentucky
4.   Who was the Rachel Lewellen in 1779 that had an illegitimate child in the Quaker records?   She's found in Washington County, Pennsylvania about the same time as Shadrach and Deborah.   Rachel was the wife of Jonas Hatfield and according to postings on the internet they moved to Warren County Ohio 1806 and then to Wayne County, Indiana by 1810.   Their children were Deborah, Thomas, Martha, Rachel, Mary, jonas, Ann, John and Nathan.
QUESTION:   Was Rachel also a daughter of Shadrach and Deborah (Burson) Lewallen?   Deborah's mother was named Rachel and it's very possible she would have already been grown and married as were Abednego and Shadrach.   Rachel and her Hatfield husband moved to Wayne County, Indiana, and that's where Meshek lived.

So many questions.   This is just the beginning.

Now a summary for Thomas Lewellin

He's first mentioned 1759 in a transaction with Bernard Young.   He's mentioned again almost every year.   On 1760 he witnessed the marriage of Benjamin Burson with Ann Roberts, as did Shadrack Lewellin.   His wife was Susanna 1765, there was an indenture between him and Daniel Jones 1770,   and in 1772, Susanna is again named as his wife in a land transaction.

We don't know if Thomas left the area or if his wife died or if both he and his wife died but in 1782 there's an indenture mentioning Benjamin Burson's property line and Daniel Jones' line and signing the document was Thomas and his wife Martha.   Samuel and John Lewellin signed as witnesses.

Obviously though, there was some connection/relationship between Thomas with Shadrach because of is witnessing the Quaker marriage of Benjamin Burson and then having property adjoining Benjamin Burson.   Thomas would have been the age to have either been a brother of Shadrach or possibly his father.

Do a quick search (control and F keys at the same time) and type in Potts.   You'll notice that the Potts are connected in some way (witnessing wills, etc.) to Shadrach Lewallen and to Thomas Lewallen.   Is this a coincidence or does it mean there's a connection?
