Another child of Wiley Lewallen's found (Anita "Nettie" Witt)

Billie Harris - Aug 26, 2009

For the longest time many of us have wondered who the Anita "Nettie" Lewallen was who married Robert Wesley Witt December 27, 1843 in Alabama.

In checking the census records today, it was obvious who she was.   They lived two households away from Wiley and Mary Lewallen and James Calvin Lewallen lived right next door to Wiley and Mary and now recalling the connection of the Lewallens with the Randolphs and Witts, some of the given names may have come from those families.   I'll do more research.

The information for her shows her birthyear as 1820 which means she was born before Calvin, however, census records show her born 1825 so which is correct, I don't know just yet, but will find out after reviewing other census records.

There may yet be another child for Wiley and Mary based on birth years.   If Nettie was born 1820, James Calvin born 1822 (shown on his grave marker in Texas) and Henry 1828, then the six years between 1822 and 1828, another child could have been born.

Robert Wesley Witt was the son of the Rev. Silas and Susannah (Randolph) Witt.   Susannah was the daughter of James Randolph and Sarah Gentry and James Randolph was the son of Henry Randolph who immigrated as an indentured servant from England into Maryland 1728. Henry and his family settled in Albemarle county, Virginia, and his wife (Mary) and some of their children started the first Baptist Church in that area.

Here's the information for Nettie and Robert Wesley contained in Annette Swenson's book:

ROBERT WESLEY WITT
Born April 10, 1822, East Tennessee. Died May 1, 1898, Moody, McLennan County, Texas.   Buried in Moffat Cemetery near Temple, Bell County, Texas.   Married (1)   ANITA (NETTIE) LEWALLEN on December 27, 1843.   She was born May 14, 1820, and died March 9, 1890, in Texas.   Married (2)   Mary E. Taylor, born Sept. 16, 1873, and died Dec. 18, 1905.   Buried in the Moody Cemetery.   Robert brought his family to Texas from Alabama in the caravan with his father and mother, Silas and Susanna Randolph Witt, and other brothers and sisters and families.   They settled near the town of Moody in Texas where they lived until they died.   Their son, Christopher Columbus (Lum) Witt moved with most of his family to West Texas where he lived until he died.   Many of his family still live in West Texas.   After Anita died, Robert married Mary E. Taylor.   She was a sister of Sarah Taylor, wife of Isaac Martin Witt, brother of Wesley. Children of Robert Wesley and Anita are listed as follows.   There were no children by Mary.   Note:   Some of the following dates are questionable.   The tombstone marker for Lucy Jane Witt shows she was born in 1848, however, the 1850 census does not show her in the family, and shows Christopher as one year old.   The 1860 census shows Lucy as 8 years old.   The 1860 census has many errors in the ages of the family.
