J.G. Lewallen dies suddenly in city street
Jesse G. Lewallen, 77, retired farmer, died suddenly Thursday of a heart attack while walking on North Broad Street, in Commerce, in front of Wood - Johnson Furniture Company.
He was born in Franklin County on May 12, 1890, a son of the late John Lewallen, and the late Mrs. Mary Brock Lewallen.
Mr. Lewallen was a member of the Beaverdam Baptist Church; the Homer Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows. Funeral services were held at 3 o' clock Saturday afternnon from the Webb's Creek Baptist Church, the Revs. Wade Lord, Herman Purcell, and Ray Richardson, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Gober Lewallen, he is survived by a brother, the Rev. Melvin Lewallen, of Warrior, Ala.

Otha's obituary reads that he was the last member of his immediate family. It lists no wife or children, whom preceded him in death or survived him in death, but it did list his sibling who preceded him in death. There was no meantion of sister ? Bell Zonie Lewallen or brother ? Thomas Henry Lewallen. I assume these names are errors in my record but will leave them here for now for further research.

Ivie Funeral Home announces the death of Mrs. Dorothy Toney Gordon, age 86, of Dunson Cemetery Road, Commerce, who died Thursday, October 18, 2007 at BJC Hospital in Commerce. Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Robert Toney and the late Dora Lee Wilson Toney. She was the widow of John Berry Gordon. She was also predeceased by three children, Grace Varsekelis, Betty Socha and Jimmy Gordon. Mrs. Gordon was a quilter for the Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include son, John (Janice) Gordon; daughters, Polly (Tommy) Brown; Emily (David) Gaines; all of Commerce; brother, Warren Toney, Commerce; sisters, Mary Steed, Commerce; Elizabeth Bickel, Macon; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Gordon will be conducted Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM from the Webbs Creek Baptist Church with John Gordon and Reverend James Dumas officiating. Roy Malone Floyd, 72, of 410 Knottingham Drive, Athens, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1987.
Mr. Floyd, a native of Madison County, was a son of the late Luther D. and Emma Threatt Floyd. He was a retired foreman for Westhouse Corp., and a US Army Veteran of World War 2 and a member of Danielsville Baptist .
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2.30 pm in the chapel of Brown's Funeral Home in Danielsville. The Revs. Albert Vaugh & Jackie Morrow officiated and burial was in Danielsville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Enmon Edge, Luther Floyd, Bobby McWhorter, Kenneth Martin, Stewart Martin and Billy Edwards.
Survivors include his wife, Claudia Logan Floyd, three sons, William Floyd, Homer City, PA., and Roy Floyd, Jr., and Larry Floydd, Danielsville ; a stepson, Robert D. Carlton man killed when struck by train
A Carlton man was struck by a train and killed as he walked across a railroad trestle over Broad River at the Madison - Elbert county line abot 7 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.
Madison County Coroner Michelle Cleveland said Michael Scarborough, 39, of a Broad River address, was walking across the CSX transportation trestle with family members and could not get off quickly enough to avoid the train, which could not stop in time to avoid stricking him.
Scarborough's death was ruled an accident, Cleveland said.

Arrest: On June 12, 2008 deputy Timothy Nix drove past a station wagon stopped on Mae Drive and he noticed that it turned its lights out. Nix turned around and saw the lights come on and the car drive off. He stopped the car and recognized the driver as Jimmy Lee Bassett, 29, of Wildcat Bridge Road, who was an unlicensed driver. After arresting him, Lt. Donald Carr arrived and searched the passenger, Russell Edward Flanagan, 29, and found a spoon. Flanagan said the spoon was one that his wife used to eat ice cream. However, Carr found some white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine. He was arrested for the possessing the drug.
