Descendants of Samuel Llewellyn (Thomas, Jacob, Benjamin, PA, Del., VA, Ind.)

Billie Harris - Nov 19, 2009

I've started this genealogy.   If any of you can fill in the blanks or add to it, please do.

SAMUEL LEWELLYN

Information on Samuel needs substantiation in parts.   What we have on him is as follows:

According to information on the internet, he and his family lived first in Wilmington, Delaware.   It gets confusing on where they lived and when because some records say they moved to Loudoun County, Virginia, then in 1770 moved to Monongalia Valley, settling on Dunkard Creek which is now in Pennsylvania, and then they settled on Cheat River in Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia) establishing the old Lewallen Ferry near the Pennsylvania line.   He obtained a grant of land in 1771 and his name is prominently mentioned in the old records among the early settlers of the county.

Samuel's wife was HANNA JONES, a widow.   "The Abbridged Compendium of American Genealogy" edited by Frederick A. Virkus shows in Volume 6 page 332 some information on Hanna Jones' son, Jacob.   "5. - Jacob Jones (1732-1829) his mother is Hanna, m. 2nd Samuel Lewellen) to Monongahela Valley 1770 and first settled on Dunkard Creek, now Pa. where 1777 his 2 oldest children Mary and John were captured by Indians..."   John escaped after 5 years and married Ann Gough.   Jacob Jones moved to Cheat Bottom, now in Preston County, VA, finally settled on a larger tract of land what is now Knottsville, W.Va 1795.   Jacob Jones had a son William (1774-1843) who was born in the woods, Monongalia Co. Va. during Indian raid..."

According to Virkus and perhaps others, Hanna Jones' son was Jacob Jones born 1732.   Note that Samuel and Hanna's son has been given as Jacob born 1735.   Was Jacob Llewellyn actually Jacob Jones, taking the Llewellyn surname?

Since he was from the same area as Shadrach Lewallen (married Deborah Burson), the question is:   Were they related or did they just happen to be in the same counties/states at the same time?

Another question in my mind has to do with the ages.   If Samuel and Hanna's first son, Jacob, was born 1735 and Jacob's son, Jacob Jr. didn't marry until 1793, then 60 years between Sr.'s birth and Jr's marriage seems like a long time to me.

Landy Gobes - Dec 4, 2009

As I read your outline of Samuel Lewellen's life, I am trying to fit in John Lewellen b 1760 who died in Preble Co, OH in 1827.   John married Catherine Duvall whose parents lived in PA just above the Cheat river.   They moved to KY then to OH.

Was John the child who was captured by the Indians and married Ann Gough?   Was Catherine Duvall his 2nd wife?

Or was there another Lewellen family in the PA/WV area in that same time frame?   A Thomas Lewellen sold land in WV and bought land in PA?

Can anyone prove or disprove any of my theories?   Thanks!   Landy Gobes
