Anderson and Asa Lewellin Bedford Co, VA 1817-1821

Carol Redd - Jan 21, 2012

Hi All

I've been corresponding w/ George Waldron who has been researching Sally Carter's descendants for years.   He lives in Bedford Co, VA and has sent me some info on two Lewellins who were bound out.   Billy and others who have been at this much longer than I have probably already have it, but thought I'd post what George sends to me.   He's posting in on Genforum, too.

I'm having to work hard now...it's tax time, so I'm not able to dip my toe into the genepool - otherwise, I'll be drowning and the work won't get done.   Hope this heps someone!

You may already have this....just sending it along. Posted on GenForum also.

Bedford County, Virginia.

December, 1817.

Anderson Lewellin to be bound to John Fizer.

December, 1818.

Asa Lewellin to be bound to John Fizer...the orders are similar for both...

At the motion of John Watt it is ordered that the overseer of the poor bind Asa Lewellin to John Fizer.

May,   1819.

Court order that the indentive bindary Asa Lewellin to John Fizer be ammended in this Viz. that the age of the said Asa Lewellin be inserted as of the age of fifteen the 17th of April last, and the John Fizer be bound to give him that education which is usual to apprentices and the law requires.

March, 1821.

Overseer of the poor summoned to show why Asa Lewellin has not been bound.

To show cause if any they can why they have not bound Asa Lewellin to John Fizer agreeable to an order of this court.

Anderson and Asa’s mother was listed as   Sally Lewellin.

1830 Bedford County, census, Northern Division....Sally Lewellen
1 female 20-30
1 female50-60

1850 Bedford County, census   Northern Division....Sally Lewellen
Sally Lewellin, age 80,   Pauper
Betsey Lewellin, age 30
Sarah Lewellin, age 4

Library of Virginia list Sally Lewellen of Bedford County, Va., died 1855, age 70, died of cancer.

I’m not sure but I think Sally Lewellen’s death is listed different in Bedford....will have to recheck.

A.N. Lewellen, age 56,   (from Virginia) 1860   Mclean, Illinois, fits the age of Asa Lewellin in Bedford County Order Books....I know census age is not dependable. The initials A.A. in 1870.....looks like to me A.A. in 1860....same people!

Elizabeth, age 57, Virginia
Mary, age 19, Virginia
A.A., Jr. age 15, Virginia

1870 census in Champaign, Illinois
A.A. Lewellen, Sr., age 67, Virginia,
Elizabeth, age 69, Virginia

A.A. Lewellen, Jr., age 24, Virginia, married in September, 1869. To Marry Mollie Burnett
Mollie E., age 18, Ohio

1880 census, Champaign, Illinois
Hiram Burnett, age 60, New Jersey
Mary Lewellen, age 28,   listed as   daughter....but the birth (place) of father and mother is different....unless she listed her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Carol, you said the two words that brings chills up my spine - tax time.

Perhaps those of you studying the Carter line might want to look at Bedford and Campbell County, Virginia, and the information we have for both those counties.   I've just incorporated the information Carol posted above.   It would appear Anderson and Asa may have been children of Charles Lewallen.   Take a look.
