Old Posting on Anderson Lewellen

Billie Harris - Apr 23, 2014

Just came across this on Roots Web regarding the Rice family.   It was posted in 2002.   I haven't gone through it all yet and it may be we have this information or we've found answers or found errors in some.   In fact,, was Alexander a son of Anderson's?   I don't think so.   But maybe we could find out more on Anderson if we discovered more about the Rice family.

Subject: [Rice-Southern-L] All the Lucys in Thomas and Marcy's line
Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 22:36:43 -0400

Hello,
I am having great confusion deciding which Lucy Rice is my ancestor, because Thomas and Marcy's (supposed) child Matthew had several grandchildren named Lucy! It helps when they have husbands named, because then I can count them off my list of possible candidates...
his son Nathan had a daughter Lucy, his son Matthew had a Lydia/Lucy, and some say that Charles had a daughter named Lucy as well.
The problem with documenting my Lucy is that it appeared she married a relative when she married Anderson Lewallen/Llewellyn. It's hard to tell if he was her Uncle or her 1st or 2nd cousin, however, because the Lewallen line has as much mystery as the Rice one! Seems that several Rices and Lewallens all came over in a group to Tennessee from North Carolina and Prince Edward Virginia, so they were probably all related but nobody knows just how!!
Well anyway, here is my line( I apologize it's so large, and only one generation. Please feel free to write me for more info):
Descendants of Lucy Rice

Generation No. 1
1. LUCY10 RICE (CHARLES9, MATTHEW8, THOMAS7, EDWARD6, RICHARD5, DOMINICK4, STEPHEN3, ROBERT2, EDWARD1) was born Abt. 1764 in Prince Edward, VA, and died Abt. 1832 in Morgan Co., Tennessee, bur. off Coal Hill Road between Glenmary and Sunbright.. She married ANDERSON GRANT LEWALLEN June 08, 1784 in Sailors Creek Baptist Church, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, son of DANIEL LEWALLEN and MARY BURKS. He was born Abt. 1764 in VA, and died 1829 in Morgan County, Tennessee.

Little is known of Anderson Lewelling prior to his marriage to Lucy Rice, on June 8, 1784. His father's name may have been Alexander (Lewelling). It is thought that Anderson came to this country, with his father, around the time of the American Revolution.
Anderson and Lucy first lived in Prince Edward County, Virginia. They moved to around Wake Co., North Carolina, between 1784-1794. While living in Wake Co., North Carolina, they had three sons: Andrew L. b. 1795, Joel b. 1800, and William L. b. 1809. In 1811, the family moved to Tennessee, settling in the area later known as Glenmary. Their fourth son John, was born approximately a year later, in 1812. In 1817 Morgan Co., was formed by an act of the Tennessee Legislature. Glenmary was now in the Northern part of Morgan Co.,. In 1819, Glenmary became the Southern part of the newly formed Scott Co.,. Most of the Lewellen's and Lewallen's came from these two States: Tennessee and North Carolina, along with some from Georgia, and Kentucky. In Tennessee the Lewellen's lived in Scott, Morgan, and Fentress Counties. In Kentucky it was Wayne County.

Notes:
Excerpts taken from the "County Scott and It's Mountain Folk" by Esther Sharp Sanderson, published in 1958 reads in part: "The Llewellyns-William, John and Leutian were sons of Grant Llewellyn, who came directly from Wales. After the Llewelly clans, who ruled Wales, were overcome by English rulers, they were banished to North Carolina. The sons came from there over the Wilderness Road, thence through the gap of the mountains to Smoky. John and William served through the Civil War with the Union forces. After they returned, William married Elizabeth Hembree. They resided in Huntsville until their deaths. "Aunt Betty" as she was commonly called, was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church in Huntsville which was organized in 1882."
. . ."Shade Lewallen, a Scott County Welchman, fought in the Battle of New Orleans under Andrew Jackson, It was a favorite pasttime for Shade to tell his nephews, Bill, John, and Leutian about 'Jackson's War' and how the Tennessee boys in buckskin rallied around Old Andy at "Orleans'. His grave is in the oldest cemetery in Huntsville, beside the Presbyterian Academy Lot. . ."
"American Ewing and Ewing Families" shows Eliza Jane Bivins, born 1829, daughter of Nathaniel and Jemina (nee Llewellyn) Bivins, married James Scott Ewing, farmer and merchant in Marshall County, Tennessee. The document on this family says data from 'History of Tennessee, Marshall County., page 1202.
Correspondence with Mr. Geo(rge) Wythe Ewing, 1912, states. "Mrs. Jas Scott Ewing was a granddaughter of Jesse Llewelly of Lane's Cree, North Carolina. At a very early date, Chadrac, Meshac, and Abednego Llewellyn came to Northe Carolina from Wales. The last named deceased without heirs, as I am informed. I have found is in the person of his great grandson, Ex. Gov. Llewellyn of Kansas. Meshac's sons were Jesse (My great grandfather) and Alfred. Of Alfred's family the only representative I can find are Thomas Llewellyn and family of Hillsboro, Texas. My great grandfather, Jesse, died in North Carolina. My grandmother, Jemina, was married in that state, and came to Tennessee in 1809, or shortly thereabout. The three brothers, above named, were direct descendants of Griffith Llewellyn, a Prince of Wales, who succeeded his Uncle David II.."

Audra, June 1, 2002
Since the birth dates are so far apart in the Daniel Alexander lines (parent born 1647, child born 63 years later at 1710), I believe there are mistakes and are leaving off Anderson's ancestors, at least until confirmation. Plus, there seems to be more than one Anderson Lewallen (Edmund Anderson, Anderson Grant, and just Anderson) in Tennessee/Virginia. Robert Bailey, Roane County Historian, believes that our Anderson actually descends from Jesse Lewallen, and that all the Daniels are probably cousins.

Subject: [Rice-Southern-L] All the Lucys in Thomas and Marcy's line
Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 11:33:48 EDT

Hello All,

Speaking of repetive names, it is interesting that the given name of Lucy is
so much a part of Rice family and descendants. Thomas (CB) Rice of Hanover
County, VA and Caswell County, NC also had a daughter named Lucy, who was
twice married; first to John Scoby; second to John Debow. His daughter,
Rebecca Rice Windsor, had a granddaughter, Lucinda Tapscott.

In Thomas' line the given name of Rebecca seems to be a significant one, as
he had a daughter named Rebecca; his eldest daughter, Marcey Rice Nunn, had a
daughter named Rebecca; his son, William Higgason Rice, named his eldest
daughter, Rebecca, who married Zachariah Neal. I am wondering if the given
name of Rebecca was just peculiar to Thomas (CB) Rice's family line?

Best regards,

John Fox

Hello Jackie,

I remember your question about Sarah Rice, and I am still looking to find one. Is it possible that your Sarah or Sally could have been a widow? I do know that Nathan Rice died before his father, Thomas, who died in 1804. Nathan was married to a Sally. I am not sure of her maiden name, but it could have been Williamson, as a Williamson Rice was named in Nathan's will. I do not have data on her after the will, although someone on this list may be able to tell us.

Best regards,

John Fox
