According to the divorce papers, a few years following their marriage William began drinking heavily and regular.   He started to beat Georgia and "caused her great injury."   At one point he drove her from the home at the point of a gun. She left, fearing for her life.   He was intoxicated so often that he neglected his family and was unfit to "attend to his usual occupation and business."   At the time of divorce, seven of their eleven children were still living.   All were grown and moved away except for Leslie Spry, who was eleven at the time.
