Clete,

We are so glad to see that you could join us. We would love to hear about your ancestors. Also if you have ancestor photos that you could share that would be great too.

Clete,

It is just good to have your questions and hopefully you will be able to get them all answered.

Billie is really great at digging in and finding the answers. She is so good with the research part.

Sometimes it just takes time to find the answers we seek.

Dorothy, I'm baffled by the Richard Lewallen marriage to Grace Stokely.   Ironically, none of Richard's daughters were named Grace nor Parazeda.   I've researched both Stokeley and Vowell and haven't been able to turn up anything.

Billie, that is strange, they usually followed a pattern on names.

Dorothy,

Thank you for the kind welcome.   I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply.

My mother’s maternal grandmother was Mary Jane (Lewallen) Jackson (b. 1861, AR; d. 1954, KS).   Mary Jane was a daughter of Monroe Washington Lewallen and Mary Ann (Wann) Lewallen, who moved from Alabama to Arkansas in the late 1840s.   Mary Jane married William B.P. Jackson (b. 1857, TN; d. 1911, MO), a son of William Sherwood Jackson and Ann J. (Collins) Jackson.   William B.P. [Bailey Peyton?] Jackson came to Arkansas with his father and stepmother in the late 1860s from Tennessee.   I believe they settled in Sharp County.   I don’t know what brought Mary Jane Lewallen and William B.P. Jackson together.   Mary Jane, my Granny Jackson, was still alive when I was a tyke.   I dimly recall her in the Fort Scott, Kansas, household of my mother’s Uncle Berry Jackson, one of William and Mary Jane Jackson’s 12 children.

This was Monroe Lewallen’s household in Black River Township, Independence County, Arkansas, in 1880:

LUALLEN Munroe W. Head Married Male White 56 AL VA TN Farmer
LUALLEN Mary A. Wife Married Female White 53 AL --- TN Keeping House
LUALLEN John R. Son Single Male White 23 AR AL AL Farming

Two other sons of Monroe and Mary Ann Lewallen -- Daniel M. Lewallen and James L. Lewallen -- headed “Luallen” households nearby.   Also nearby was this household headed by William B.P. Jackson:

JACKSON William B. Head Married Male White 22 TN NC TN Farmer
JACKSON Mary J. Wife Married Female White 19 AR AL AL Keeping House
JACKSON Martha E. Daughter Single Female White 1 AR TN AR

I’m working on a tangle of families in Black River Township that included the Lewallens and Jacksons, as well as others.   I’ll post a message about that tangle soon.

As Billie Harris and I have discussed via e-mail, I’m also working on what I call my central Lewallen mystery: How did Richard Lewallen of Prince Edward County meet and marry in 1793 Grace Stokley of Norfolk County?

That reported marriage was noted in a "Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Tennessee," which was compiled by Lucy Womack Bates and published in 1979:

“LEWALLEN, RICHARD (b. 1763 Prince Edward Co., VA/d 5-8-1833 prob. Anderson Co.) Lived Prince Edward Co., VA during War. Entered service as Pvt 1781. Service in VA Line. Age 71 in 1832 Pen list of Anderson Co., TN; 1834 P.L.W. m. 1st Norfolk Co., VA to GRACE STOKLEY, m 2nd 6-1-1818 Anderson Co., TN to PARAZEDA VOWELL. Ch: John; Samuel; Richard; Charles; Betsey m Samuel Moore; Polly m Jesse Patton; Susannah m James Kirkpatrick; Milly; Ann; Alexander; Nancy; Daniel; Jesse; Louise; Freeman. Ref: DAR # 381533; Rev War Pension File W.26211; A 1.”

I’d be interested in evidence anyone has that the Richard Lewelling recorded as marrying Gracie Stokeley in Norfolk County, Virginia, on 30 March 1793 was Revolutionary War veteran Richard Lewallen of Prince Edward County, Virginia, and not a member of the extensive Lewelling family living on or near the Elizabeth River in Norfolk County from as early as the 1600s.

Regards from Virginia,

Clete

Clete, I'm glad you're on here, too.   Hopefully we can find answers to these questions, especially if others help in researching on this.   There's an answer somewhere.

Here's what we have for Arkansas and if you can add to it, please do:
