John Llewellyn, b. Schuylkill Co. PA 1847, d. Elk Co. PA 1926, was married to Nancy Russell and had 14 children with her.   However, in the 1920 census Nancy Russell is in Detroit, MI married to a Levi Gardiner, along with 8 of her children (ages 27 to 5)listed as stepsons and stepdaughters.   Do the dates line up for John Llewellyn (son of John from Wales and Catherine Kahley from PA) to be the father of the Carters and Sextons?   If so, there are MANY descendants who could be consulted.   John was our great-grandfather's younger brother so the descendants' yDNA would match my brother Dan's.

Mary

My John Preston Sexton was born 1859 Morgan Co, TN
Your John Llewellyn b 1847 PA could not be his father, but could be the son or nephew of John Preston Sexton's father.   But, I don't think so.   I'm fairly certain that the father of my John P. was John Lewallen who was living within spitting distance of Mary Ann Stewart, who eventually married John P.'s "father", Fielding Sexton.

By virtue of the fact that the Carter line goes back to Sally Carter, b 179_? Bedford Co, VA, we KNOW beyond any doubt that
1)   our common ancestor was born before 1790s, (even several hundred years before), and
2)   he would have been from Wales.

Tracing those that we KNOW came from Wales in the early 1800s and showing matching dna results helps us to get closer to our common ancestor, but it's likely that we'll simply never know.   Billy and others have been doing this for years and can't get behind the late 1700s.

Carol,

If the Carters are Llewellyns, are we certain "the Carter line goes back to Sally Carter, b 179_"?

I'm intrigued with the pre-1920 separation/divorce of Nancy Russell Llewellyn and John Llewellyn, and her relocation to Detroit, Michigan with 8 of 14 children.   The back story must be interesting!

Your John Lewallen and my John Llewellyn must have been cousins, perhaps with a common ancestor in Wales or England. I read more on Welsh surnames and learned that male descendants had different surnames.   Example:   Evan Rhys with a son named William Evans with a son named Richard Williams with a son named Thomas Richards.   Llewellyn - probably Llewelyn - was someone's forename rather than surname.   Despite lacking paper trails, maybe the DNA results will pinpoint the area of Wales that is most likely our home. With so many Llewellyns still living there, it may very well be Glamorgan.

Angie and Rob are our Carter cousins and I believe they have very certain paper trails back to Sally Carter.   She was the daughter of Charles Carter (I think) and never married but had several children - two sons who are represented by Angela's brother(?) and Rob's dna.   Of course, her female children's lines aren't represented w/ dna tests, but having two sons test positively as Lewallens means at least those two were fathered by either the same Lewallen or brothers/cousins.

Angie and Rob - haven't heard anything from you recently.   Have you found out anything more about who might have fathered Sally's children?

WOW - however will we trace our Welsh ancestors without common surnames???
