Scott County, TN early settlers

Darlene Luallen Griffin - Sep 30, 2011

The current quarterly newsletter published by the Scott County Historical Society contains the following article, "Reminiscences of Pioneer Days in Scott County, Tennessee" by Jehu Phillips, as printed in
The Cumberland Chronicle, starting in April 9, 1904.   An excerpt from the articles reads as follows:
"Uncle Jehu says that about the time Scott County was organized those pioneers who had come in here had settled along New River and the different creeks.   Those old settlers living on Black Wolf Creek beginning at head waters were Andrew Lewallen, Jackie Potter, Joe Lewallen, old man Peak (who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War), Hinchie Redman, who lived below where the town of Glen Mary is located and Matthew Davis..."   I found this especially interesting since my Lewallen ancestor is Matthew Lewallen, born abt 1821 in TN (listed on 1850 Scott County census) and our Luallen/Lewallen DNA turned out to be Davis DNA

Good clue, Darlene.

Refresh my mind, which needs refreshing more and more lately.   Who was the earliest know Davis that the fellow who tested descends from?

Billie

This is an email I sent to the Lyons fellow whose dna matched Darlene's Luallen.

I note your last name is Lyons, so we'd really like to know more about how you connect to our Lewallens from Morgan/Scott Co, TN and more importantly, how you possibly connect to Nathan Davis.   I've located him in Morgan Co, TN in 1840, and he's the oldest Davis found in that particular census.   He is listed on pg 7:
1840 Morgan Co, TN (pg 7)
Pleasant Davis 20-29 (1811-1820)
Robert Davis 40-49 (1791-1800)
Nathan Davis 50-59 (1781-1790) 20-29 yr old female w/ 2 young daughters 1 under 5 (1836-1840) and another 5-9 (1831-1835)
AND Jackson and Herrod Luallen both   20-29 (b1811-1820)

I've combed that census for Walter Davis and other Davises trying to find a link to one of our Lewallens, Walter Davis Lewallen.
(pg 1)
Wm. Davis 20-29   (1811-1820)
Under 5: 1/0

(pg 3)
Walter Davis   20 - 29: (1811-1820)     2/1
Under 5:     0/1

(pg 5)
M. P. Davis & wife: 40-49 (1791-1800)
Under 5:2/0
5-9: 1/1
10-14: 0/1

(pg 9)
Thomas Davis 30-39 (1801-1810)

(pg 11)
I. S. Davis 30-39 (1801-1810)

(pg 15)
Hugh R. Davis 20-29 (1811-1820)
Wm. Lawson 40-49
John Lawson 30-39
Arny? Lawson (female) 80-89, 40-49 (1791-1800) and one daughter under 5

(pg 19)
Walter Davis 60-69 (1771-1780), wife 40-49 (1791-1800) 1/1   15-19 (1821-1825)

In the 1850 Scott Co, TN census, Walter Davis Lewallen is living next door to Andrew (1795 NC) and Malinda (Davis) Lewallen, Rebecca Lewallen (1800 TN), and Joel Lewallen (1800 NC) - these 3 are widely recognized as children of Anderson Grant Lewallen.   I tend to think he's the son of Andrew since he married Malinda Davis, but so far I have not found positive proof as to who his parents are.   It's possibly Rebecca, since she appears to be unmarried, but likely to be the mother of Martin Lewallen (1837 TN).

We're grateful you've joined the Llewellyn Project and look forward to learning more about just how you match dna w/ our Darlene, descendant of Matthew Luallen and who your common ancestor might be.   This is shaping up to be quite an exciting 2011!

In addition, in New Castle County, Delaware, there was a David Lewelin who died Jan. 23, 1777.   Mentioned in his Will was Ruth Davis, his wife's brother's daughter.   So, David Lewelin married a Davis.

In Greenville County, Virginia, 1819 Mary Lewallen married James Davis.

Then, of course, we know Andrew Lewallen (born 1795) was married to Melinda Davis (her mother was Elizabeth b. ca 1750) and his daughter Elizabeth (b 1818) is said to have married a Davis.   Plus his son Andrew Russell (b. 1824) married first Peliscia Davis.

My cousin's DNA matched 66/67 markers with Walter Cleveland Davis.   His earliest ancestor is Nathan Davis from Lincoln County, NC (b. 1775-1786) (see Billie's post).   Nathan's son William moved to TN abt 1825.   William Davis' sons were born in Monroe County, TN.   Walter's family has researched Nathan Davis since the 1950s and still know very little about him such as parents/siblings.   It does not appear that his line of Davises connect with my Lewallens.   I really think that my Matthew Lewallen was fathered by a Davis man in Morgan County, Tn and that his mother was a Lewallen.   I think the Davis who fathered Matthew is probably a nephew of Nathan Davis or a cousin's son.   The Davis Project is quite large but I do not think anyone who descends from the Morgan/Scott County Davises has tested.   I think Walter Cleveland Davis joined our Llewellyn Project but I could be wrong.   I have not heard from him since our first email several months ago.   I have noticed in my research that anywhere there were Llewellyns, there were Davises.   I have to laugh to myself because my parents' neighbors for over 40 years in California were Davises and my uncle married a British girl whose mother was a Davis.   So the connection continues.
