Llewellyn descendants in Kansas and Missouri

Mary Parker - May 20, 2012

This is information regarding another Pennsylvania Llewellyn who ended up in Kansas and Missouri.   Elizabeth Llewellyn, was the daughter of John Llewellyn, b. 1813 in Eng. or Wales and Catherine Kahley, b. 1815 in PA.

Elizabeth A. Llewellyn, b. Tuscarora, Schuylkill, PA, 1841, married Joseph W. Hurst or Hirst (spellings vary), a coal miner, and lived in Falls Township, Chase County, KS acc. to the 1880 census.   Their children included: William Hurst, born IL/ Polly, b. IL/ Joseph, b. IW/ Mary, Iva, Maggie, Seth, all b. KS.   Elizabeth died around 1893 in Deepwater, Fairview Township, Henry County, Missouri.   The John Hurst family lived in Henry County, Missouri, perhaps related to her husband.

Does anyone else have this family in their family tree?

I don't have those folks in my line either, but thanks for posting Mary.   My line is from Benjamin Lawellin b 1796 Kentucky, d 1866 Anderson Co. Kansas.   Benjamin Lawellin was married to Nancy Jane Sutton (1804-1859) and their son Jeptha Wesley Lawellin b.12/03/1834 Ward Twp, Randolph Co, Indiana, d 1907 Jackson Twp, Anderson Co., Kansas was my g.g.grandfather.

Mary & Billie,

Any mention of Llewellyn (etc.) and Missouri on this site sends me immediately to the Missouri State Archives’ Missouri Death Certificate Database (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates), which now holds death certificates from 1910 to 1961.

The database has death certificates from Henry County for:

JOHN W. HURST (b. KS; d. 1934, MO), a coal mine operator, who was listed as a son of Joe Hurst (b. England) and Elizabeth Ann Lullellen (b. PA).   No date of birth was listed for John W. Hurst; however, his age at death was listed as 75 years, 9 months, and 10 days.   At that age, his date of death on 24 December 1934 computes to a birth date in 1859.   The 1900 census lists his month and year of birth as March 1861, and birthplace as Kansas.   A “Find A Grave” memorial for him records his date of birth as 3 March 1859, and a photograph of his headstone has that date.   The Missouri death certificate database also holds a death certificate for John’s wife, Nellie (Kenyon) Hurst (b. 1868, KS; d. 1951, MO).   Nellie E. Hurst shares a headstone with her husband, noting her date of birth as 6 April 1868, and date of death as 27 July 1951.

WILLIAM A. HURST (b. 1863, IL; d. 1938, MO), a laborer, who was listed as a son of Joseph William Hurst (b. England) and Elizabeth Lauellin (b. PA).   A “Find A Grave” memorial names him as William Alfred Hurst and his wife as Rose Anna (Stahl) Hurst (1869-1902).   The Informant on William’s death certificate was Mrs. Harry Sanders of Deepwater, Missouri.   She was Violette (or Violet) M. (Hurst) Sanders (1891-1954).   Her death certificate names her as a daughter of William A. Hurst and Anna (Stull) Hurst.

JOSEPH HURST (b. 1872, PA; d. 1946, MO), single and a laborer, who was listed as a son of Joseph Hurst Sr. (b. England) and Elizabeth Leuellen (b. Unknown).

MARY (HURST) THOMAS (b. 1876, KS; d. 1947, MO), a housekeeper, who was listed as a daughter of Joseph Hurst (b. England) and Elizabeth Luellen (b. PA).   The database also holds a death certificate for Mary’s husband, Edgar Elton Thomas (1868-1957).

IVA (HURST) MANBECK (b. 1878, KS; d. 1958, MO), a widow and housewife, who was listed as a daughter of Joseph W. Hurst and Elizabeth Lewellyn.   She’s named incorrectly on the death certificate database as “Ina” Manbeck.   The database also holds a death certificate for Iva’s husband, Elmer Manbeck (1879-1939).   That death certificate names his wife as “Ivy” Manbeck.

SETH HURST (b. 1884, KS; d. 1934, MO), a laborer, who was listed as a son of Joe Hurst (b. England) and Elizabeth Lleaualen [sp?] (b. PA).   He was single.

An obituary posted to “Find A Grave” notes [John W.] “Jack” Hurst and his brother Seth died within a few hours and just blocks away from each other, just before midnight on Wednesday, 12 December 1934, in Deepwater, Henry County, Missouri.   The obituary notes they numbered among 15 children of Joseph William Hurst and Elizabeth (Luellen) Hurst, eight of whom lived to maturity.   The obituary noted the surviving brothers and sisters were Wm. Hurst, Mrs. Ed Thomas, Mrs. Elmer Manbeck, and Joe Hurst.

Many of the individuals named above [none with an obvious connection to my mother’s Arkansas-born maternal grandmother, Mary Jane (Lewallen) Jackson (1861-1954)] were buried at the Deepwater Cemetery in Deepwater, Henry County, Missouri.

Finally, a "Find A Grave" memorial notes Elizabeth A. Hurst (31 May 1841-10 October 1899), the wife of Joseph W. Hurst, is buried at the Deepwater Cemetery as well.

Gee, I love it when you do that, Clete.   You always come up with great material.

I looked for John and Catherine Llewellyn thinking they may have gone with their daughter and son-in-law but it doesn't appear they did.

Am confused though.   It says Mary Thomas and Iva Manbeck were Luellens but yet they were daughters of Joseph and Elizabeth (Luellen) Hurst.   Do you think that means Luellen was her middle name or should it have been Hurst?

Clete Ramsey - May 22, 2012

Billie,

You're correct.   The maiden name for both Mary and Iva should be Hurst, not Llewellyn (or some form of it).   Also, Violet (Hurst) Sanders' mother was Anna (Stull) Hurst, not Violet (Stull) Hurst.   I've corrected all three errorors.   My mistakes, typing late in the evening.

Clete, the additional information is great, but not totally accurate due to the liberal spelling of "Llewellyn", Elizabeth's maiden name. (All of us named Llewellyn are familiar with that.) Thanks so much for providing the additional research!

Billie, John Llewellyn and Catherine Kahley Llewellyn are my direct ancestors.   They were buried in Beech Creek, Clinton County, PA.   He died in 1892 and she in 1860.   Elizabeth was the one child (of 12) who left Pennsylvania for the midwest.   This is the same line of Llewellyns who are paternal ancestors to Carol Redd's grandfather and the Carters' grandfather.

By the way, the Kansas census lists them as "Hirst" but Missouri lists them as "Hurst".

My brother Daniel's yDNA exactly matches that of Carol Redd's ancestor John Sexton and the male Carters.   Carol reports her family lore   that a John Lewallen was actually the father of Mr. Sexton.   We don't know if this was the Pennsylvania John Llewellyn, b. 1813, his son John Llewellyn b. 1847, or another male relative. Although they initially worked in the mines, John Llewellyn the elder eventually farmed in PA.   His son John worked on the railroad and had 14 children.   Eventually his wife, Nancy Russell, left him and moved to Detroit.   I believe you are correct that Carol's ancestor lived in Tennessee and, later, Arkansas

Billie Harris - May 23, 2012

Mary, I remember now the yDNAs do match and sometimes my memory needs jogging.   Your brother's DNA also matches my line of Lewallens and the descendant's of Anderson Lewellen's as well.   Have you tried tracing your Lewellyns before they came to the U.S.?   I know we have little to nothing on this site of information other than here and it would be interesting to see what we could find abroad as well

Mary Parker - May 24, 2012

Oh, yes!   I have tried and tried, but to no avail.   Initially, I believed John Llewellyn, b. 1813, had the middle initial "S", but that does not seem to be accurate.   I also initially accepted that he was born in Gloucester, England, but that is uncertain.   In later census records, he and his children reported his birthplace as Wales.   He was a miner in Pennsylvania and most Llewellyns are from the mining areas of Glamorgan or Monmouthshire in Wales.   The Welsh census does not begin until 1841.   Since joining this group, I have had a hunch that my Llewellyns are related to Marlea's family, but we have not yet found the link!

Mary Parker - May 24, 2012

Using customary naming patterns of that era, I believe John's father's name could have been "George" (or Thomas) and his mother's name was possibly "Sarah".   His wife Catherine Kahley's parents' names are reflected in the names of the firstborn son (Adam) and daughter (Maria).   I'm guessing John's parents' names are the secondborn son and daughter, since "George" and "Sarah" are not among names in Catherine's family.   The third son was "Thomas", possibly named for someone related to John.   Also, it could be that George was his grandfather and Thomas was his father.   Finally, I also considered the Welsh practice of no "family surname", but that he was "John ap Llewellyn" and his father "Llewellyn ap ???".   (John, son of Llewellyn" and "Llewellyn, son of ???").   "George and Sarah Llewellyn, husband and wife",   are reported as paupers on the 1841 England/Wales census, but I have been unable to trace them to my ancestor John, who emigrated in 1834

In the lead post in this thread, Mary noted Polly Hurst/Hirst as another daughter of Joseph W. Hurst and Elizabeth Ann (Llewellyn) Hurst.

In a 12 January 2002 post, “Joseph & Elizabeth (Llewelyn) Hurst,” to the Hurst Family GenForum at Genealogy.com, Bonnie Ramsdale reported that Polly Ann Hurst (b. 3 July 1868, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania), married William T. Meranda on 2 March 1887 in Hartwell [a village in Honey Creek Township], Henry County, Missouri.

Polly was living with her parents in this “Hirst” household in Falls Township, Chase County, Kansas, in 1880:

HIRST J. W. Head Married Male White 45 ENG ENG ENG Coal Miner
HIRST E. A. Wife Married Female White 39 PA ENG PA Keep House
HIRST William Son Single Male White 16 IL ENG PA
HIRST Polly A. Daughter Single Female White 11 IL ENG PA
HIRST Joseph Son Single Male White 9 IA ENG PA
HIRST Mary Daughter Single Female White 4 KS ENG PA
HIRST Ivy Daughter Single Female White 2 KS ENG PA

I strongly suspect Polly’s future husband was the William T. S. Meranda living in this household in Walker Township, Henry County, Missouri, in 1880:

MERANDA G. F. Head Married Male White 46 IN KY MD Farmer
MERANDA Elizabeth M. Wife Married Female White 45 OH VA OH Keeping House
MERANDA Albert P. Son Male White 16 MO IN OH At Home
MERANDA William T. S. Son Male White 14 MO IN OH At Home
MERANDA Vashti Daughter Single Female White 11 MO IN OH At Home

While some accounts name him as William Techanseh Meranda, I also suspect that Polly’s husband actually was William Tecumseh Sherman Meranda, named after the famed Union Civil War general.
