Hi:

Anyone still living in Scott County Tennessee and access to look-up land records from the clerks office, would you please look-up the possible land deed for Zachariah Lewallen?   I found in an 1876 will for Joseph Phillips that he listed the border of his land he was going to will to his son was joining an old land deed in the name of Zachariah Lewallen.   I would like to know the date of the filing of the deed,   copies would be wonderful, but   not   that important.   I am trying to determine if this Zachariah Lewallen is the 1822 my great-great grandfather or if it maybe the 1785 Zachariah who maybe the father or uncle of my Zach.   I did find in an 1812 pension record for Lucretia Lawson Thompson the wife of Blackburn Thompson that Zachariah and Nancy McDonald Lewallen were aquainted with Thompson from 1838 when Zach and Nancy married until 1855 when Thompson moved to Arkansas and they lived in Campbell County Tennessee at that time.   Zach and Nancy   appear on the 1860 Scott County Tennessee census and that is the first census were they appear.   Thanks in advance.   Renee

Renee, hopefully someone can help you.   It does appear he was a landowner - or could it be he was just renting the property?   But could you post exactly what it says in the Will of Joseph Phillips and I'll add it to the Tennessee summary for Scott County.

So far, the only information I've found in Scott County for Zach was:

1850 -"Ordered by the court that John Jeffers be appointed overseer of a second class road from Samuel Lawsons to the James Town road and have isac Reed, JOHN LEWALLEN, Isac Jeffers, ZACHARIAH LEWALLEN, Jacob Aron Philips, Nathan Bowlin, MATHEW LEWALLEN and he have said hand to keep same in repair."

1852 - April Ordered by the court that John Childers be appointed overseer of a third class road in room and stead of Emanuel Duncan from the top of Paint Rock hill to Thomas Chambers hands to keep the same in repair.
Ordered by the court that Berry Duncan be appointed overseer of a third class road in room and stead of Thomas "Griffith" from the "ford" of the river near Pleasant Chambers and that he have "SHADRICK" SEXTON, JOHN LEWALLEN, Jessie Hix, "ZACHARIH" LEWALLEN to work on said road.
Pg.201: April 1852, Ordered by the court that Berry Duncan be appointed overseer of a third class road in room and stead of Thomas "Griffis" from the "fork" of the river near Pleasant Chambers "to the oak tree near Aron Philips" and that he have "SHADRICH" SEXTON, "John Jeffers," JOHN LEWALLEN, Jessie Hix, "ZACHARIAH" LEWALLEN to work on said road.

1859 - Amos Lewallen was born June 8, son of Zachariah and Nancy Lewallen.   Amos died May 14, 1946 in Shep, Texas, wife Nancy Ann Bruner.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

1873 - Widow's pension application dated 23 Feb. 1872, Huntsville, Madison Co., AK Lucretia Thompson, age 80. Affidavid dated 12 Feb. 1873. "We, Zachariah Lewallen and Nancy Lewallen, of the County of Madison, State of Arkansass, say we were well acquainted with Blagburn (sic) and Lucretia Thompson from about the year AD 1838, up to about the year AD 1855 in Campbell County, Tennessee, and that of their children who we have know was A.G. Thompson, Harmon Thompson, B.M. Thompson, Milly Thompson, Annie Thompson, Sarah Thompson, and Lucretia Thompson Nancy Thompson, and Martha Thompson. Blagburn (sic)   and Lucretia Thompson left Campbell County, Tennessee to the County of Madison, State of Arkansas. Zavchariah Lewallen's age is 51 yr. old the 26th date of April AD 1873, and Nancy Lewallen's age is 55 yrs. old the 18th date of February AD 1873. Lucretia Thompson stated in 1873 that the following persons had attended her wedding: Randolph Lawson, Susan Lawson, Milly Phillips, Mary Prewitt, Elisa Lawson, James English and John and Sarah Jeffries, all of whom were deceased in 1873 except Sarah Jeffries)

According to Ancestry, there was a Zachariah in the War of 1812 in the Wayne County, Indiana militia which, of course, wouldn't be yours. Wayne County was the area where Shadrack and Deborah Burson Lewallen's family lived, but it was the first time I've seen that given name in their family, and can find nothing else for it.

And I've seen some references on Ancestry that your Zach's middle name was David and some say it was Davis.   Do you know if he had a middle name and if so, what it was?

Let's hope someone can answer the land question for you

Did Shadrack file for the 1812 Pension?   So far I have not located the paperwork.   Thanks Renee

I found on the Roster Roll for the War of 1812 that Shadrack and Zachariah maybe the same person it was listed as follows:

Lewallen, Shadrack (Zachariah)

On the marriage license it is Davis if you look really close.   There is a check mark after his name that makes it look like David

Renee,
I was just looking though my notes and I have this fragment.
The land between Isaac Reed and John Phillips was owned by Zachariah Lewallen as of 13 Feb 1849 (application being made on 28 Dec 1848).   In the 1860 Huntsville, Scott Co., census you will notice that Joseph Phillips is house #12/10 and Zachariah Lewallen   #13/11.   Still looking for the land record hardcopies as they were very expensive as I recall and I don't really want to order them again.

P.S. DNA sample sent but not yet received by the family
tree dna lab.Oh, by the way (if I did not mention it before) Michael Lewallen must have belonged to some investors group as there is paperwork on leasing for mineral rights.
