Question re Zachariah and Mathew
Billie Harris - Jul 25, 2012
Those of you researching those two given names probably have posted things on here before that escapes my memory right now.
There was a court order in 1850 Scott County naming both Mathew and Zachariah:
1850 -"Ordered by the court that John Jeffers be appointed overseer of a second class road from Samuel Lawsons to the James Town road and have isac Reed, JOHN LEWALLEN, Isac Jeffers, ZACHARIAH LEWALLEN, Jacob Aron Philips, Nathan Bowlin, MATHEW LEWALLEN and he have said hand to keep same in repair."
Mathew is listed in the 1850 census, household 10. Next door is Thomas Lawson and it appears on the previous page of the census there was a James Sexton.
The other Lewallens in the census were Andrew and John listed as households 94 and 95, and A.R. and Andrew as households 189 and 190. Herod was somewhere in between, household 160 or somewhere along there.
Where was Zachariah in the census?
And is it possible since Matthew was born 1821 and Zachariah born 1822 and they're both named in that document that they were brothers?

The first census where Zachariah appears is the 1860 Scott County Tennessee. Before that there is no census record of him only the Affadivat for Lucretia and Blagburn Thompson were Zachariah says he knew them from 1838 to 1855 in Campbell County. And as listed above land and court records. Hope this helps. I do believe they maybe brothers and Rebecca Lewallen with son Martin Lewallen may also be involved. Hope the DNA clears some questions up.

Then apparently Zach was in Campbell county those years.
In 1841 Campbell County, Matthew married Sarah Lawson. In 1844 Viola married Jacob Lawson and Polly married Samuel Berge. The only other mention of a Lewallen or variation of that spelling in Campbell around that time was Charles.
Anyone checked the Burge genealogies to see if something might turn up?

In the 1840 census for Campbell County on the same page you find, John Louallen, Joseph Hatfield, James McDand(McDonald), Thomas Lawson, Blagburn Thompson, along with Phillips, Jeffers, Goad, Chambers, Griffy, and others on other pages. The John Louallen should be Sheriff 1812 Lewallen he had listed Males 2 under 5, 1 5-10 and 1 20-30 and females 1 under 5 and 1 20-30.

I visited the Campbell County Historical Library yesterday and was very disappointed to not find information about Lewallens and only a little bit about Lawsons. I do have the name and phone number of a gentleman who supposedly knows a lot about Lewallens. Now I have to get my nerve up to call him. I think the lack of information is a good indication that our Lewallens were in the Huntsville/Wolf Creek area of what is now Scott County the whole time. Scott County was not formed until 1850; before that the area was Morgan & Campbell Counties.
