Billie,
First, as always, thank you for your dedication to the research of the Lewallen family which includes your hard work and willingness to share.   I am not a Lewallen but have had the privilege to be involved in some Lewallen research in the last few years which mainly involved the families in Prince Edward Co., VA, Wake Co., NC, and Maury Co., TN.   My main focus was Aaron Lewallen, his family and his origins.   So, I will share with you what I "created" as a family for Claiborne Lewallen who died in Maury Co., TN.   This possible family is based on census records, marriage records and court records of Maury Co.   I can post a more detailed description of these sources later.   Please feel free to ask any questions or make any comments/corrections to this list.

Billie,
You are too kind!   But thank you.   Here are my notes for Claiborne, written in June 2010:

Time-line for Claiborne Lewallen:

1750-1760:   Born   (based on his age on the 1840 census)
1787, Prince Edward Co, VA:     Clarborne named as a son of Jesse Lewallin
1797-1806:   Wake Co., NC   (Aaron and Elijah born during this time period in NC;   source War of 1812 enlistment)
1810:   Warren Co., KY census;   one male <10, one male 10-15; he is 26-44; 4 females <10, one female 10-15, wife 26-44 (name   unknown)
1813:   Maury Co., TN (Tax list);   Aaron and Elijah enlist in Nashville, TN
1820:   Maury Co., TN Census; 3 males <10, he is 45 ^;   2 females <10, one female 10-16, 3 females 16-26,   wife 45^   (those 2 younger males are absent from the home; Aaron was already married by 1820)
1830:   Maury Co., TN shop keeper (Josiah Lewallen's estate settlement)
1830:   Maury Co., TN Census, household of Rebecca Mills there is a male 60-70, could this be Claiborne?   Gideon Mills died 29 August 1829 (U.S. Pensioners, 1818-1872; ancestry.com)
1833:   Maury Co., TN marries Nancy Hill 29 May 1833
1838:   Maury Co., TN School Census; C. Lewellen, 8 District;   ages 6 & <16
1840:   Maury Co., TN   Census; 1 male >5; 1 male 40-50; 1 male 80-90;   2 females <5; 1 female 5 <10; 1 female 40-50 (his wife, Nancy Hill)
1840-1850:   "Maury County Cousins" Volume 2 compiled by Maury Co, TN Historical Society in 1971, pg 274;   "Claiborne Lewallen is listed under Pauper Coffins;   "Petition for Claiborne Lewallen " an honest industrious good citizen.....for more than three years unable to walk or in any way do for himself by the use of his limbs being taken from him by rheumatic pains.....has a wife and two small children."........no property........no date.   One of the signers was John J. Zollicoffer.
1850:   Maury Co., TN Census;   Nancy Llewellyn age 40, with Joseph Llewellyn age 19 and Susan Llewellyn age 12 living in the household of Pleasant Johnson and his wife Elizabeth.

My conclusions based on the above circumstantial evidence:

Claiborne is in Wake Co., NC at the right time for the birth of Aaron and Elijah.   (A grand daughter of Thomas M. Lewallen, said his father was born near Durham, NC.   Wake Co. is the closet place to Durham that we find Lewallen's on the 1790 and 1800 NC census records)
He has 2 males in his household in 1810 the right ages be Aaron and Elijah.
He is in Maury Co., TN in 1813; Aaron and Elijah enlist in the War of 1812 in 1813 in Nashville, TN
(The fact that Claiborne was in Maury Co., TN by 1813 is to me a really BIG deal since Aaron and Elijah enlisted in Nashville in 1813.)

Additional source material:

"Wake County North Carolina County Court Minutes", 1797-1800, Book IV; a deed from Aaron Johnson to Clabourn Lewellen, dated December 1797.   ( Claiborne's sister in-law, Francis Lewallen, bought something at the estate sale of Aaron Johnson)

"Wake County North Carolina County Court Minutes" 1801-1803, Book V, place Claiborne still there in August 1803 when he was named on the tax list of the District of Capt. Blake.

Book VI which covers 1804-1807, places him there in August 1806 when he purchases some property from Thomas Johnston and in   November 1806 when he makes a deed to Edmund D. Ford.   He is actually still there in August 1807 when he is on a tax list.

Hope this helps someone.   Please feel free to ask any questions.

It seems possible that Aaron Lewallen might have been named after Aaron Johnson... Maybe?

After looking at the 1840 census for Maury and seeing a male and a female (Nancy) about the same age (40-50), and then a man who would have been Claiborne at age 80-90, is it possible Claiborne had a son named Claiborne and he's the one who married Nancy rather than the old man?

Sue Cooper - Oct 3, 2012

Billie,
I have considered the possibility that Aaron was named for Aaron Johnson.   There seems to be some indication that this particular Lewallen family and the Johnson family were related or at least good friends.   Of course anything is possible especially when there are so few records on the family.   Maury Co. has a wonderful Archives which I visited during the time I was researching this Lewallen family.   However, it seems that Claiborne was very poor and did not leave much of a paper trail.   Although, he was a shop-keeper.   I found this information in the Estate settlement of Josiah Lewallen.   According to "Maury County Cousins" Volume 2 compiled by Maury Co, TN Historical Society in 1971, pg 274;   "Claiborne Lewallen is listed under Pauper Coffins;   "Petition for Claiborne Lewallen " an honest industrious good citizen.....for more than three years unable to walk or in any way do for himself by the use of his limbs being taken from him by rheumatic pains.....has a wife and two small children."........no property........no date.   One of the signers was John J. Zollicoffer.   When you compare the household of Claiborne's in 1840 with Nancy and her children Joseph and Susan in 1850, the ages don't match exactly.   The male on the 1840 census in the age bracket of 40-50 could be the husband of Nancy.   I just never found any thing that made me think there was more than one Claiborne Lewallen in Maury Co.   Usually, if there are 2 men of the same name in the same county at the same time, Sr and Jr were used to distinguish between the two.   I did not find any records using Sr or Jr.   There was no date on the record printed in "Maury Co. Cousins", but we do know by 1850 Claiborne Lewallen had died.   IF, Claiborne had a son, Claiborne, who married Nancy Hill, he had died by 1850 also.

Sue, you're right.   Claiborne must have married Nancy Hill simply based on the "Maury Country Cousins"... "by the use of his limbs being taken from him by rheumatic pains...has a wife and two small children."   But who would have been the male in the 1840 census who was about the same age as Nancy (census shows her born ca 1810)?

The John Zollicoffer who signed the petition about Claiborne was his next door neighbor in the 1840 census.   I also noticed on the next page of the census a William Due, which me leads to additionally believe Aaron was probably a son of Claiborne's.   Aaron's oldest son, Joseph, married Elizabeth Due, although her father has been given as John Wesley Due (1809-1852), but perhaps there's a connection there somewhere.

I'm sure you're right about the Johnsons because the 1850 census for Nancy, Joseph and Susan show her living with Pleasant Johnson (born 1825), Elizabeth (born 1827) and their two children, William Johnson and John l. Miller Johnson.

Thanks as always for your post and taking time to answer my questions.

Sue, something I found this morning which might also substantiate Claborne as Aaron's father is that there was a John Sherring who lived in Wake County, N.C. 1790 and he was there with John Sherring Jr in 1800.   And then, as you state above, Claborne was in Kentucky and in 1820 we find a John Sharron in Nicholas County, Kentucky.

For those who don't know, John Sherring (probably/ possibly a son of Jr) was listed as a friend who served in the War of 1812 with Aaron and his brother Elijah.   Clabourne was also in Wake County NC those years.
