John Llewellyn
Knox, Morgan, TN

John Llewellyn was my 3rd great grandfather, born 19 JAN 1836, in Morgan Co., TN. He was the third of 8 children born to William and Nancy Llewellyn. He married Elizabeth Elmyra Shannon about 1860. He was a blacksmith by trade and a Missionary Baptist Church deacon. He was also a Master Mason. He served in the Confederacy, working in Knoxille, TN. He owned 225 acres in Farragut, Knox Co., TN in the vicinity of Lovell Road and Kingston Pike. He is buried in that vicinity at the Grassy Valley Cemetery.

Knoxville Sentinel Obituary
Concord, Feb 16, 1910 –  John LLEWELLYN, one of the best known citizens of this section, died at his home near here this morning at 6:45 oclock at the age of 74 years. Mr. Llewellyn has spent nearly thirty years on his farm here three and on half miles northeast of Concord on Kingston pike. He was prominent in the church and Masonic circles and his demise will be generally regretted throughout the county and in Morgan County where he was reared. Mr. Llewellyn leaves to mourn his loss four sons and one daughter who are W. A., N. C. and C. S. LLEWELLYN of this city; F. H. LLEWELLYN of Los Angeles, California. And Mrs. Nannie J. Hulin of this place and who lives at the old home place. The deceased was born in Morgan County, January 19, 1836, and was therefore 74 years, 27 days old at the time of his death today. Early in life he married Miss Elizabeth Rich 1, also of Morgan County and to that union six children were born, one a son John B. Llewellyn 2, having died six years ago. Up to the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Llewellyn engaged in the vocation of a farmer but at that time he came to Knoxville and joined the Confederate Army. He was stationed at this place throughout the greater part of the war in the machine shops operated by the Confederate government. At the close of the war, he followed the trade of a blacksmith in the southern section of the county, near his home and later bought a farm and again engaged in farming, until twenty years ago when he retired from the active pursuits. His wife died several years ago. Mr. Llewellyn was a member of the Grassy Valley Baptist church since its establishment twenty-eight years ago and during the greater part of that time he was an …  missing …prominent member of the Chota Lodge No. 253 F and A. M., of Concord and lived to see all of his sons made Masons. In connection with his Masonic career, an incident, which occurred in Knoxville about four years ago, will be well remembered by those who were present. The occasion was the installation of N. C. LLEWELLYN, his son, residing here as worshipful master of Master’s Lodge No. 243 F. and A. M. This is one of the oldest and the second largest Masonic Lodge in the state and it has always been deemed a high honor to be named worshipful master in it and when Mr. Llewellyn was installed, a grand program was arranged. The officers of the state grand lodge were present and the deceased received an invitation from the lodge to be present. Following the ceremonies, a banquet was served, followed later by a Masoinc “love feast” at which the venerable father of the selected head of the lodge was one of the speakers. The obsequies over the remains of Mr. Llewellyn will be conducted from the Grassy Valley Baptist church, Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock by the Reverend C. B. Waller, pastor of the Deadrick Avenue Baptist Church of this city. The funeral will be in charge of the Chota Masonic lodge and all that remains mortal will be interred in the church yard in the family plot, beside the remains of his wife and son. All of his surviving children will be present with the exception of F. C. LLEWELLYN of Los Angeles who will be unable to be present. A large funeral party from this city is also expected to attend.

That's okay. My blog is currently down but will be back soon.

This John fits in like this:

John Llewellyn was a son of William Llewellyn, William Llewellyn was a son of Anderson Llewellyn.

John'   had a son named John Bell Llewellyn, John Bell had a son named Frank Llewellyn and he was my grandfather.

John Bell was not mentioned in the obituary because he died before his father.

Rick

Do you happen to know the middle name of John (1836)?   Would it be ok to post this photo of John and Myra on my Facebook page to my Sexton cousins?   As you may know, my g.gr grandfather was John Preston Sexton whose DNA matches Luallens.

Thanks, Carol Sexton Redd

Rick Llewellyn - Aug 30, 2010

Sure, post away. I believe John's middle name was Elisha. But I have no proof other than memories from
my great aunt ... Fifty years ago.

Rick

I read thru your blog and noticed that you listed the obituary as being in error stating that he married Elizabeth Rich.   I notice that James is listed as Lewallen, age 6, in the 1860 census and as James Rich, age 18, in the 1870 census.   Since I'm new to this research, I wonder if you've ever uncoverd a previous marriage for Elizabeth Elmira "Myra" Shannon.   Is James Rich her son by a previous marriage and that's why the obit lists her as Elizabeth Rich?

Rick Llewellyn - Aug 30, 2010

James Rich (1860) was her nephew. James Llewellyn was a son.

Carol Redd - Sep 1, 2010

Rick, do you know which of Myra's sister was James Rich's mother?   I searched for a Shannon/Rich marriage but can't find one.
