There has been question about this being Sheriff John Lewallen (1812-1896). Many years ago it was sent to me by one of John's direct descendants stating it was this John, but since then we have found the same exact photo in a book written by Paul Roy in Scott Co, who also is the publisher of of the Independent Harold Newspaper in Scott CO, TN.

The book is Scott County in the Civil War. On page 61 it shows this same photo and the name of the man in this book is Patton Foster, a Private CO F , 12th KY Infantry in Civil War. Says he was born March 3, 1934 and lived most of his life in Scott County. He and his wife are buried in Grave Hill Cemetery In Scott CO, TN.

There is also another photo of him in the book A Pictorial History of Scott CO, TN on page 22. This book was compiled by the Scott CO Historical Society. He is shown with a group of residents from the Norma Community in this book, with the same clothing on.

I strongly believe this is not John Lewallen according to these two books.

Thanks for setting the record straight.   It sounds as thought this photo would be the Patton Foster born March 3, 1834, right?   If he lived in Scott County, too, then his name may crop up in research so the information could be important, who knows.

Yes, I would definitely say it must be Patton Foster. I pulled both photos up, this one and the one of John sitting in the chair and compared, and they do tend to look somewhat a like.   Since he is in two different books from Scott Co, I would say that the ones writing the books must have known who it was for sure. Two different sources.

This is an interesting development and I'm pleased that members of this web site continually search for the correct answers. I have seen this picture on-line before but not in any of my grandmother's (Tennessee Lewellen Ewing, dau. of Sheriff John) many family pictures.   Thanks for sharing this information.

I would also like to thank you for researching this image. I have it on my website, I can't remember where I acquired it, but I will definitely take it down.

It was posted by Susie Sweeney many years ago   on a web site, that I used to have.

She said, that it was Sheriff John.   I always was curious about this photo. I was glad to finally find the answer.
