Is Issac the son of   John Lewallen ( 1812 - 1896) married to Delilah REED ( 1815 - 1865 )?

Yes, Isaac Lewellen born August 8, 1834, Morgan, TN is the first born son of John Lewellen & Delilah Reed Lewellen.

I'm confused about the "description"... I think Columbus was the 1st son of Anderson "cash-up" Lewellen and Sally McDonald. (From first marriage not one to Nancy McDonald) Not "Isaac Lewellen and Nancy McDonald" as listed. I believe Isaac was married to Nancy Jeffries and is Columbus's uncle not father. Did I get mixed up information?

Billie Harris - Jan 21, 2010

Unless I've missed it on here somewhere, we could really use the lines of descent for those who descend from Anderson and Lucy (Rice) Lewellen.

Mary  Hubbell - Jan 22, 2010

Diane, you are right - it can be confusing.

In this case, there are at least three Columbus Lewellens.
One born to John Lewellen and Delilah Reed "Columbus Scott" born 1845.
One born to Anderson "Cash-up" Lewellen   and Sally McDonald born in 1857, mentioned in Balzada's letter as the son who hit "Cash-up", left Texas and died in New Mexico.
One born to Isaac Lewellen and Nancy JONES (subject of this discussion). "Lum" I don't know his birthdate.

Looking at it closer I noticed an error in my book. Correct page 55 to read that Isaac's wife, Nancy died in 1888 (not 1908).

Now for the conflicting surname of Isaac's wife:

McDONALD - This surname shows up in "Genealogy of Anderson S. "Cash-up" Lewellen" by Kelley Lewellen.

The only Nancy McDonald I've found (other than Cash Up's wife) was the daughter of James McDonald. According to Egbert McDonald's 1937 handwritten notebook, that Nancy married Jack Lewellen (who was this?) but he includes no other information. I don't know the source but my files shows this Nancy was born circa 1826 (I don't create birthyears - someone must have shared it).

JEFFERS/JEFFRIES
I found a personal history (Sorry, have misplaced the original. If you recognize it, let me know).
Life was hard, the soil poor, national conditions had not improved. In 1873, the country was in the midst of a depression, there was panic in New York with inflation, bankruptcy and suicide taking place.
The Lewellen families began planning to go to Texas. Isaac, who had married Nancy Jeffries circa 1855 had left with his wife and three children. They stopped in Arkansas where a son was born in 1866. Then they continued their trip to Texas where they lived for a time at Fayette County, Texas. Another son was born there in 1868. Two years later, they were in Bell County, Texas where they bought land and prepared to settle down. Isaac bought land about six miles east of the present city of Temple. Their sixth child [was born] there in 1870. Nancy had four more children, before she died on 13 April 1888. Isaac's second wife was Saphama Davis and she had 4 children.

This surname and the following are both backed up by the same source:

JONES
The online site for the Lancaster Cemetery in Bell County, TX has the following:
Nancy (Jeffries) Lewellen
7 June 1836 in Tennessee
13 April 1888 in Bell County, Texas
Daughter of W. G. & Ellen (McDaniel) Jones
First Wife of Issac James Lewellen

Sometimes people interchange McDaniel/McDonald - could that be where McDonald came from?

So, It looks like Isaac's first wife and mother of this Columbus was born a Jones, married a Jeffers/Jeffries and then married Isaac Lewellen.

UNLESS Jones is a typo and it should read "Daughter of W.G. & Ellen (McDaniel) Jeffries?

Considering that I've come across at least two illegitimate Jeffries/McDonald births that could be an option as well. Anyone know any further information?

And another Columbus born 1862, son of Andrew and Elizabeth Lewellen of Scott County, TN.

Diane Greer - Jan 25, 2010

Mary Ann, You did notice how Billie Harris wrote that our "my Family" could use the lines of descent from Anderson and Lucy (Rice) Lewellen...Well that's us girl ! I vote you in to do the honors.Your the great, impressive, composer of written family history. (am I proud or what) I'm certain you could type it out in a snap.
