Oh my goodness.   It is indeed a difficulty one to find hidden among all the weeds and shrubbery.   This is my ancestor.   Do we know what his stone says?   Is it readable?

Thanks for posting it, John.

Could only make out the name, look like the name had been scratch on the stone.
No dates readable.

Would this be Wiley Lewallen, born 1786, VA? In my notes and I'm not sure they are right, I have him listd as a son of Anderson Lewallen and Lucy Rice.

Billie Harris - Jun 6, 2010

He was born 1795/6.   There's a good chance he was the son of Anderson's but I'm more inclined to believe he was a nephew and the son of Jesse.   I have nothing to base that on.   I only wish we had a genealogy for Anderson with some sort of documentation.   We know some of his children I think, but not all.   Has anyone ever searched for a Will for Anderson?

Ok, now I feel a little foolish for not checking thru these archives a little more thoroughly.   Wiley appears to be father of Calvin who seems to be grandaddy to Cindy's grandaddy William M. Lewallen.   I'll keep reading.

Wiley is the father of James Calvin.

On Census, also has Calvin next door to Wiley LouAllen

Yes, that Calvin is Wiley's son.   Unless James Calvin is mistaken about WHERE he was born showing in census records, then the family didn't leave North Carolina until after his birth 1822 and that lets out Anderson as Wiley's father as everyone has suspected.   His sister Anita (Nettie) who married Robert Wesley Witt was born Tennessee 1825.   They were still in Tennessee 1835 but by 1837 had moved to Alabama.

But Wylie was born about 1795 and if I remember correctly, Anderson left   North Carolina for Tennessee   around 1810.   There was a marriage 1795 of Jesse Lewallen Jr.   and Delpha Fogerty and Anderson was the bondsman so I still believe Jesse Was Wiley's father.   The only ones remaining in Wake County was Moses and William who were undoubtedly also related but they were still there in 1830.

I can find nothing for a Delpha Fogarty or Fogerty or any similar spelling and none of Wiley's descendants are given that name so it could be she went by a different given one.

And yes, Rena was Calvin's daughter although until you just posted this, I never knew her name was anything other than Rena.

Thanks, Dorothy.

Incidentally, the way I have this family figured is:

THOMAS LEWALLEN
In his Amelia County Will, he named his wife Susannah and son Jesse.   No mention of other children.

1. JESSE.     By 1789 Jesse was in Wake County, NC because he was selling some of his Prince Edward County property.   In 1798 he sold some of his land to Jesse, undoubtedly his son.   He isn’t shown in the 1800 census.
Sons were:
             A.   JOHN who died unmarried and named his father, Jesse, and brothers in his Will of 1787; filed 1788. . Witnesses:   Edmund Todd, NANCEY LEWELLIN   and NANNY LEWELLIN
             B.     JESSE.   Anderson Lewallen was bondsman and J. Rice witness to the marriage of Jesse to Delpha Fogarty in Wake County NC 1795.   The 1800 census shows Jesse with   2 males 0-10, 1 male 16-26 (1774-1784), 1 female 26-45 (1755-1774).
           C.     CLABORN bought land 1797 in Wake County, N.C.   In 1803 he purchased property.   He sold the property and by 1810 was in Warren County, Kentucky (as is a William) and by 1816 was in Maury County, TN.
           D.     MOSES   married Frances Chumbley   1788 Prince Edward Co.   Surety was Jesse Lewelling.     Moses was in Wake County by   1790 as was Jesse, his father.   Moses was deceased by 1800   because his wife, Frances, is shown in the census with 2 males 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 16-26 (1774-1784)       Frances made several purchases of property in Wake County and   one sale in 1816.   They had at least one son and probably the   others I’ve added.   See info for Wake County.   The 1840 census for Wake doesn’t show this family.:
                   a.   MOSES married   Matilda Oliver 1821 Wake County.   The 1830 census shows him 1 male under 5     1 male of 5 and under 10     1 male of 30 and under 40     1 female under 5     1 female of 5 and under 10     1 female of 20 and under 30
The 1830 tax list shows him with 0 acres.
                   b.     JOHN showing in the 1830 census with     1 male under 5     1 male of 10 and under 15     5 males of 15 and under 20     1 male of 40 and under 50
                   c.     WILLIAM.   The 1830 census for Wake shows him with undoubtedly his mother.   1 male of 20 and under 30     1 female of 50 and under 60.   The tax list shows he entered 0 acres for himself but 238 acres for Frances.

My guess is that Wiley was the son of Jesse (B.above) and Delpha Fogarty.
