Description: This picture has been in my cousin's
family for about 100 years and she was
always told that it was of her
grandmother's grandfather.   On the back
is written Cabet Rice Lewallen.   I have not
been able to find any mention of a Cabet
Rice but have found documentation for a
3x's great grandparent, Anderson Rice
Lewallen.   Does anyone recognize this
Lewallen?

Debora:   There seems to be plenty of references and documents to Rice Lewallen and Rice was apparently his middle name..   His first was Anderson which was also the name of his father.   The only reference to Cabat or Cabot that I could find is on this photo.

Incidentally, he was in the Civil War but you probably know that already.

Hi Billie, I did not know that he was in the Civil War!   I knew his brother Rowlett was but I
had not found documentation for him.   Where can I find it?

Billie Harris - May 29, 2014

I found it on Ancestry.   U.S.Civil War Draft Registration Records shows, among others:

Rice Lewallen born ca 1830 Kentucky.   Residence July 1, 1863 - 17th Sub. District, Knox, KY.

Also shows two Anderson Lewallens:

One born ca 1820 New Jersey.   Residence 1863 was Camden, New Jersey

The other was born ca 1825 Virginia.   Residence 1863 was Warsaw, Hancock, Illinois

Incidentally, we have the following information on   the one in Hancock County, Illinois:
1877 - Anderson Johnson Lewallen died Jan. 1.   He was born Mar. 30, 1825 in Bedford County, VA.   His wife was Martha Butler (1823-1895).   They had a son William Richard Lewallen (1850-1918) whose wife was Louisa Moncrief.   William Richard Lewallen died 1918 in Wyandotte Co., Kansas   (his father and mother may have been William J. and Susannah (Tyler) Lewallen of Bedford County).
